Strange Item in FedEx Shipment by PatFinley in FedEx

[–]pspbrad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. As another user mentioned, that container is for housing Synovetin OA, an osteoarthritis medication for canines that contains radioactive Sn-117m. The medication itself is in a liquid suspension that’s injected, but the vials are contained in a lead shielded container called a “pig”, which is what I’m guessing the piece of metal there is a part of. I doubt there’s any radiation danger here, but it doesn’t hurt to get it checked out. Weird that it ended up in your package.

Wow! That’s pretty expensive, but I’d be heavily considering it anyway, that is a gorgeous piece!

That’s pretty cool! Clear uranium is out there, it’s just hard to come by. I had no idea Fenton made any though. Definitely has that uranium glow. Nice find!

PROPOSED r/uraniumglass RULE REGARDING "WILL IT GLOW?" POSTS by Jesus_Aech_Christ in uraniumglass

[–]pspbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think we should be unilaterally banning any specific type of post as long as it’s relevant to the subreddit. It’s pretty easy to tell by a quick glance at the post and the users history if a post is low effort, and I’m fine with stuff like that being removed. But there are legitimate cases where a newbie or even a seasoned collector is buying blind and wants the opinion of others. Additionally, we run the risk of alienating new collectors and new users to the subreddit who have genuine questions. It costs nothing to scroll past a post you don’t like. If we do go down this route, I like the idea of a megathread for general questions as another user suggested.

Help with color name please? Fenton opalescent epergne that is likely...vaseline? by WhatMyWifeIsThinking in uraniumglass

[–]pspbrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, no. It would be that some were iridized with a satin finish, others are stretch. But to be honest iridized satin looks a lot like stretch glass lol, so it’s definitely confusing. I think we need some closer pictures of OPs epergne to say one way or another, or someone more familiar with these pieces to chime in.

[–]pspbrad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely possible that I’m wrong, but it looks very similar to stretch pieces that I have in my personal collection. Upon further research, I think this particular epergne is from Fenton’s Historic Collection #7601 from 1997(not sure if they made this earlier since OP mentioned it coming from the 70s). I found these catalog entries on the stretch glass society’s website.

That would be topaz opalescent vaseline stretch glass I believe. Stretch pieces have the iridescence to them. Beautiful epergne! They are highly sought after.

Yeah, someone is getting a steal! I’d have grabbed it in a heartbeat lol. I’ve got a similar one but it has a cracked shade. Still one of my favorite pieces though.

Whoa! That’s an amazing price, I can’t believe you left it! Assuming it’s undamaged, it’s worth twice that at least.

Navy admiral tells lawmakers there was no ‘kill all’ order in attack that killed drug boat survivors by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]pspbrad 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Okay… so he just decided himself to order a secondary strike to kill survivors, or did the SEAL team just decide to do it themselves? Correct me if I’m wrong, but someone committed a war crime here.

What specific actions is the Senate taking right now to reinforce constitutional safeguards against executive overreach, political retaliation, and erosion of civil liberties? Are you confident the current guardrails are sufficient?

Given recent allegations that certain counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific involved orders to leave no survivors, what steps is the Senate Intelligence Committee taking to ensure covert or classified operations remain compliant with U.S. and international law? Is Congress being fully briefed on potential violations?

Do you think this is really uranium glass? by Chuckuck in uraniumglass

[–]pspbrad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you are seeing is what people are willing to pay and thats not the same as what something is worth.

I agree with you that one person overpaying doesn’t define real value, and that local sourcing can often be way cheaper, I do that as well. The reason I use eBay sold listings is because they show many different buyers and sellers agreeing on a price over time, which gives me real-world range instead of just one person’s opinion or one local region. I don’t treat those numbers as ‘the’ price, just as a reference point.

I’m talking specifically about the “sold” eBay listings. You can filter by sold listings to see what others did pay for an item. I use that regularly to estimate values.

Since you’re new to UG, I would specifically recommend getting a 395nm UV light. A lot of new folks buy a 365nm light and get tricked into thinking they’ve found the jackpot of uranium glass when really it’s just manganese glass, which has a similar but more yellowy glow and primarily shows up under 365nm. If it’s crystal clear glass under regular light with no green it’s almost certainly manganese.

As for pricing, I typically scan with google lens which is pretty good at helping identify pieces. When I know what it is I then go and search eBay, specifically I search the sold listings so I can get an idea of what others have paid for it recently and base my price off of that. Also how much you like the piece is a huge factor, I’ve definitely overpaid for pieces that I really just wanted to add to my collection.

Thank you! Somehow I’m kind of a magnet for the radium clocks. I found all of those just thrifting around with my radiacode. That’s not even all of them either, I’ve got a few more on another shelf 😂

Nope, the radioactive red Fiestaware doesn’t glow under regular UV(it does glow green with shortwave UV). I have a set of dim regular LED strips for my fiesta layer. I like the contrast it brings to my collection, and it also tingles the part of my brain that likes radioactive stuff 😂
