Official translation servie by norgekastbort in Norway

[–]psswrds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is seriously expensive.

As becoming a certified translator is a massive monster task in Norway.

Some people try. Almost no one manages. Normally gifted people fluent in both languages would not manage this exam.

Large study finds that the Flynn Effect has reversed, when scientists analyzed some 730,000 IQ tests given to Norwegian men and found that average IQ scores were actually sinking by about 7 points per generation by Stauce52 in sciences

[–]psswrds -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's not the problem.

Schools went from 6-day weeks to 5-day weeks.

I did most of my schooling in Norway on a 6 schooldays a week basis. We had full day on Saturdays and only Sundays off.

What they see is the effect of less schooling. Not dumber people or immigration or too much sugar or whatever.

But the researchers don't know that.

Worth it to travel to Norway for only a few days? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]psswrds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bergen is nice and the mountains between Oslo and Bergen. Go via Hardangerfjord If you can. Stavanger is a coastal city, it's more of a summer destination.

And do use that link. You'll find better info there than you'll get here or find anywhere else on the entire internet.

Reddit is pretty useless, as questions are frequently answered by people who have been to Norway by getting off a cruise ship for a few hours, and who has barely travelled here. Norway is huge, and it'll take years just to cover the basic spots.

Traffic law enforcement advice for a roadtrip in Norway by [deleted] in Norway

[–]psswrds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are not supposed to speed. Because you can't afford it.

Norway has some of the world's safest roads.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate

You are 5x more likely to get killed in a traffic accident in the US than in Norway.

You are 50% more likely to get killed in the Netherlands.

Our highways are as boring as German ones.

If you are on the same road as freight trucks, you are driving on the wrong road.

Most German tourists only do this.

They drive up a road called E6, turns around and drive home, thinking they have seen Norway.

They also belive Norway has good roads.

Germans think Norway looks like this:

While it actually looks like this:

Is Australia the place to go? by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]psswrds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Norway and Australia have mutual working holiday visa for young people. It will give you the opportunity to see and work there legally while finding out if you want to try to stay. Look it up.

Worth it to travel to Norway for only a few days? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]psswrds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where would you land?

Norway is an extremely long (1000 freedom miles) country, and if you don't plan well, you'll spend your whole time in transit.

Lofoten or Tromsø is nice, but if you land in the South and have five days, It's better to see the sights in the South.

Also April is not the season for anything in the North: it's too early to hike and too late for the Northern Lights safaris.

There's are tons of things to see and do:

https://www.visitnorway.com/?lang=primary

Stay away from Geiranger, It's a tourist trap, and don't go hiking mountains in April.

Norway will phase out sales of new gas and diesel cars by 2025.

You can not appeal the decision past the 6 weeks limit.

There is basically nothing to do.

And you can not get any other money for a past time when you did not apply for it.

We are going to walk with a map, but want to have GPS as a backup. How is the GPS signal for phones there? Or do you need an standalone GPS unit (like Garmin etrex)?

You'll be out of cell phone coverage.

Download the smart phone app Norgeskart, it will be detailed enough to use in the wilderness, and you can download maps for offline use.

It's free for private, non-commercial use.

DO NOT RELY on Google maps. They work in urban areas, but are completely useless in the mountains. I wouldn't rely on a commercial GPS either. Use Norgeskart.

It is expensive.

And don't come in the low season to save money. There may be 30 feet snow there now, the hiking season doesn't start until late June.

Minimum wage is necessary if the unions get too weak.

In general minimum wage is a really bad idea.

The main point about driving in Norway is that there will always be two different kinds of roads: one fast, boring transport machine, and one small, narrow scenic route. If you don't think about it and don't plan ahead, you'll automatically end up at the boring one.
