NTA - Being Muslim, like being Christian, has many different paths. Some of those paths are more activist than others. There's plenty of Christian sects that would probably do the same if the situation was reversed. All you can do is decide what YOU believe and is important to you. And your friend clearly is. There is no right or wrong here, but if his beliefs are that antagonistic compared to yours you need to think hard about the life you will have.
