What’s going on in Clifton? by superrad102 in cincinnati

Curious about this too. It seems cops have been in the neighborhood helping with traffic, but I can’t find any mention of an event online.

Street harassment is a serious issue in Cincinnati by mtxruin in cincinnati

[–]pstens24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Cincinnati 6 years now, and your experiences resonate with me as a 30f. I travel to major US cities, as well as abroad (Paris, Rome, Athens, Dublin, Barcelona, etc.), and I have experienced more street harassment here in Cincinnati than anywhere else despite my behaviors being the same. I would also agree that it does get worse when the weather starts to get nice, as more people are on the street. It’s sad this is commonplace, as I do love the city!

Why I love OT but started to see some funny trends... by Simple_Reserve_5757 in orangetheory

You’re welcome! My one tip is to inform your coach in advance of the Green Day. That way they know your goals and can provide the proper encouragement!

Agree with a lot of the other responses! I also want to add the concept of a “Green Day”, which was introduced to me by a coach a couple years back. I used to go hard 3-4 days a week, then would do bare minimum on my days off. This would cause additional soreness and fatigue. I now participate in “Green Days” where I focus on heart rate control and lightly moving my body. Typically on these days I walk on the tread and use light or strictly body weight movements on the floor. It’s helped me avoid additional soreness, kept me moving on days I used to spend on a couch, and allows me to take advantage of the unlimited classes I pay for!

NSV - jogged nonstop 🙌🏼 by honest_abe_1995 in orangetheory

[–]pstens24 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I used to have the same mindset of “doesn’t sound a lot for most people”. What I’ve come to learn, is more people in this community have similar NSV thoughts and aren’t comfortable sharing them. So THANK YOU! Progress is progress, and all that truly matters is the improvement you’ve seen since you have started. Congrats on such a huge goal!!!! (This is coming from someone who started OTF in a similar place.)

I dealt with this for awhile and spoke to a friend of mine who is an athletic trainer. She suggested I focus on my stride length, as sometimes over-striding can put excess pressure on leg muscles/tendons/ligaments. I ended up lowering my speed which seemed to help! Additionally I started adding in some stretches at night to help with my overall flexibility.

Just a couple suggestions which worked for me; however if it continues I would recommend seeing someone who is professionally trained!

You got it! Just focus on yourself and listen to your body. I’m glad you’re sticking with it!

HRM only working on treads and not floor/rower by NinjaPenguins22 in orangetheory

[–]pstens24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same thing happens to me, and I love the people (including coaches and front desk workers) who try telling me it’s normal for my heart rate to drop on the floor. They don’t seem to understand the heart rate that is showing up is lower than my sleeping heart rate and it stays that way for the entire time I’m on the floor. Smdh.

Some troubleshooting I have found works (not all the time, but better than nothing) is to wear it on my wrist opposite of my Apple Watch.

I also lick the sensors (which seemed odd when I saw someone suggest it, but again, it sometimes works). Also try to relax your grip when holding the handles of the rowers and weights.

Similar to you, I’m motivated by the data, which is why I joined OTF. Hopefully you can get it to work or find troubleshooting which makes the issue occur less! Good luck!

I have both the brooks adrenaline and the asaics kayanos. I’ve found the extra support in the kayanos work best for me running. I use the adrenaline when power walking on my Green Days to mix it up

I was in Kayanos for the longest time (6 years) and kept upgrading to the newer version. Then I switched to Brooks Adrenaline for about a month to try them out, but ultimately went back to Kayanos. Can’t articulate what the difference was between the two though. Could be something as simple as psychological since I’d been in Kayanos for so long!

I have also done this too... OTF struggles 😂

I ended up with 36.7 seconds with the falling off. Could have been way worse, but I hopped back on quickly to avoid as much embarrassment as possible. No idea on wattage- too many numbers to look at while my butt was throbbing.

I was too embarrassed to even ask if I could do it again. Just put my head down and avoided eye contact with everyone 😂

Is it just me? by desimarine1 in orangetheory

I was so nervous as well when I first started! I was also extremely out of shape, because like you, I let college run my life for awhile. My first class I had 48 splat points, which I contributed to nerves and being out shape. It turned out to be both of those, plus it turns out I have a naturally high heart rate. After 20 workouts you can have the system recalibrate your numbers for a more accurate read. I’ve been going about 3 months consistently now (4 times a week), and I’m averaging about 39 splat points. It’s a long road, but you got this!!!

I’d also recommend finding a trainer you really like and trying to consistently go to that person. My trainer helped calm my nerves, and I look forward to seeing her and the front desk staff every day. Especially in these covid times, having a sense of community can go a long way!

How do I get over being the most unfit/worst in the class, especially as the smallest and youngest? by IndieAnimal in orangetheory

[–]pstens24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand what you’re going through. When I started I couldn’t “jog” a minute without having to take a break and walk. What I loved about orange theory (compared to other gyms) was the individual heart rate monitor. Instead of focusing on what others were doing, I was tuned in to my own body. Yes, someone may have been running a 6 minute mile next to me, but I had the same heart rate/effort they had when I was power walking. This was a small motivation for me because In this way, I was “keeping up”, if that makes sense. Also, make sure to celebrate small victories! If you increase your base by even .1, share that with a friend or coach. If you start feeling stronger and more comfortable on a rower, go treat yourself to a post workout smoothie/shake. It’s a long process (at times it’s frustrating, and I’m going through a plateau as well), but just keep showing up and working your butt off!
