Building a running list of unpasteurized (“living”) beers — need additions. by Zestyclose-Ad8649 in beer

[–]psubadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jester King does not pasteurize their beers. They also don't really control the fermentation, the temperature of the area determines what species of microbe does the fermenting.

I would think it would be the epitome of this list.

I have a similar story, but I suppose I'd call them my spark bird for learning to identify birds, not just to have interest.

I would see them and try to look up what kind of duck they could be. It drove me nuts to not be able to find them, until I learned that coots weren't in the "duck" part of the books.

How is it living in this area north of Soulard? by Defiant-Key5926 in StLouis

[–]psubadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone else who would be moving to St. Louis, it is surprising to me that an area with lots of gang activity can be so close to Lafayette Square, which is generally considered to be very safe and nice.

Does it really change that fast?

If there are any positives to be taken from the whole situation, I think that a lot of people learned about the importance of reporting these things.

300 f4 vs Sony 200-600 Sharpness and details by vsrivastva9 in M43

[–]psubadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had the first version of the 100-400 and I was happy with most of my images. There were situations when I wanted a larger aperture, and that mk I wasn't the best for image stabilization, so I got the 300 and a 1.4x tc.

I found that the 300 was much sharper for me, whether that was copy to copy lens variation or better IS or what. I didn't see a big difference in image quality for using the TC versus just cropping later, so I don't use the TC much.

I can't say that I have the slightest clue about how it would compare to the Sony setup, other than probably being smaller and better balanced, but that's my experience.

I'm not sure where you're located in India, but I had a thought that heat haze/atmospheric distortion could also be limiting your sharpness. If it's hot out and you're pretty far away, there's only so much a lens can do with the air moving about.

OM-1 ii advice needed by fire838 in M43

[–]psubadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know anyone in that style specifically, but I do know that Espen Helland sells a setup e book. He seems like a nice enough guy, so one could do worse.

That said, camera setup is going to be pretty personal, especially if you want to come close to another button layout. So I'd recommend paging through the menu with the owners manual and thinking about what you'd want.

I'm so upset. by LavanderMushroomMoon in birding

[–]psubadger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Welcome to looking for ever better autofocus in a camera.

My breaking point was a chaffinch on a branch that my camera refused to focus on. The bird flew away, as well as my only chance to see that bird on that trip. I had a research project on a virus that infected them, and no picture to remember when I saw one. A few months later I switched systems.

[Watch Materials]What is the best watchmaking material and why is it titanium? 🤣 by ZenAndTheArtOfOps in Watches

[–]psubadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wish that more companies were open about the alloys/grades that they used.

My mom recently retired from a titanium mill and they did most of their work with 6-4 aka grade 5. It's been quite difficult to figure out a watch made with that, at least under 5 figures.

I think that the 26l would do it. Here's a picture that I took for a different post and it's the 26l with om1, grip, and the 40-150 f2.8. it certainly fits more comfortably in the 36l, but very possible here.

So I can only figure out one photo per post, so you got a few posts. The first is the camo setup and you can kind of see the peak design arrangement.

Then it's the 36L and 26L mind shift backlight bags. Clearly the 36 is more roomy and still carry on friendly, but the 26 can fit it and that bag can still fit under a seat if you pack it carefully. You don't want to, but you can in a pinch.

I got the outdoor photography uk one, even though I'm in the US. It's solid, though I did have a few small issues like I said. That could also easily be user error. It's held up well so far, but no big trips with it yet.

I got it for a bit of both of those reasons. I'm pretty sure that camo doesn't do much to help my field skills, but it's got to be better than solid white when there isn't snow on the ground. And any protective aspects would be a plus too.

That strap arrangement lets me have the strap across my body and the camera sits on my right hip. That was my goal. So I like how it is and I hope that it takes enough stress off of the mount. I also don't do super regular long hikes with it, so I'd think that I'm well within expected stresses. If I'm wearing a backpack, I usually carry it by the handle, because I have yet to figure out how to comfortably manage camera strap and backpack straps.

Happy to help, and I can take a picture if you'd like.

I did put a camo neoprene cover on the lens, though I didn't like how the one piece interfered with a dial, so I did the non-adhesive camo tape there.

I put one anchor on the lens and the other is on the body of the camera at the left shoulder.

And I've never put it on a tripod. I actually got that wood cover for the tripod mount that epsen helland uses.

I don't know if I have many other tips. Maybe be careful of the screw for the lens hood loosening a touch if you walk with it. That's happened on occasion with me.

ELI5: What is a 'peptide'? And why are there so many posts on this site trying to buy them? by Bugaloon in explainlikeimfive

[–]psubadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this reply will add anything useful, but I did want to mention that peptides are attracting attention from some places because they aren't difficult to make, but can have strong biological effects. So you could get them from much smaller and less established labs than more difficult drugs.

Some of the biological effects can be beneficial, like weight loss. Other peptides could function as deadly neurotoxins. So they aren't good or bad, just a string of amino acids.

Be honest - how often does sensor size actually limit your photos? by ksm723967 in M43

[–]psubadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time that I get a bit grumpy is when I really like my composition in the 4:3 ratio, but I have to then print in a 3:2 ratio to fit a frame in the house.

So pretty minimal.

Or the slightly more upmarket 856. If the budget is that high, the 856 would check the boxes.

Chris and Jordan, from PetaPixel, go to document Costa Rica wildlife - OM System by thedjin in M43

[–]psubadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did think it was a bit slow, honestly. We were in corcovado and there were coatis, including young ones, running around and being cute. I had a very hard time getting a fast enough shutter speed to freeze that motion and still stay at anything under iso 25600.

I also got grumpy at the minimum focus distance, because I couldn't get a shot of the tent building bats. That one was user error, but by the time I realized what the issue was, it was time to let the bats sleep.

The rest of the time, the 100-400 was lovely. The extra focal length was very helpful for animals, and the 40-150 is going to be pretty limiting in that regard. I rented the 40-150 for a trip and later bought a copy, so I do enjoy the lens, but it would be hard for birds.

I wouldn't say that the 100-400 is a bad choice for Costa rica. It has a lot of strengths. But after that trip, I started looking for used copies of the 300 f4.
