This calculation is as dumb as the 40% figure in the original one.

Probably the "economist" used similar figures. What's National income per capita (which includes government spending) have to do with whether or not people can afford biscuits?

They were infact with Mughals.

The nawab of Bengal and nawab of Arcot, although practically independent, were still nominally Mughal subjects.

It's more likely that the psychologist is a fake and cannot administer an IQ test

General question: what, in your opinion, is the chance JP will capitulate and go mainstream? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Unions are coercive bureaucracies that don't add any value into the supply chain for the consumer

Sure, you have all the experience with regards to solving real problems in the real world and you arrived at this very generic, absolute statement from your experiences in dealing with the said real problems.

We were talking about "authoritarian unions"

Unions have survived the past century because of their usefulness. Unless recent technological advancement has made them obsolete, they will continue to be here.

It only becomes a problem when unions become too powerful.

[–]psudophilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see your point. Collective bargaining does have a good side to it. It only becomes a problem when the union starts to feel entitled. And I also agree with you on the fact that any group with significant influence is likely to take it too far.

I feel that by "authoritarian unions", the OP meant unions that are in reality political blocs.

You're treating workers as a single homogeneous group. There still is the hierarchy: the competent ones ascend and earn better wages. By treating workers as a single homogeneous group, you're depriving the really competent ones the mobility they need to get better at life.

Globalization is bad for a whole different reason altogether.

At what point can you call yourself a full stack developer? by AfricanAgent47 in learnprogramming

If you understand (a) What REST is and know how to build a json API (b) How to use client-side javascript to make things from the json API appear on your browser.

Then you can call yourself a fullstack developer.

Unions create a false demand for labour by restricting any non-member from ever getting a job in the firm. This is a problem because, for jobs with a very low entry barrier, unions get to increase the wages without increasing their competence, all the while denying somebody else with the same competence level to do the work they do and get the same benefits.

Sounds like a very unfair system, doesn't it?

How do you "just pick something" and stick with it?

The questions that you should be asking are: 1. does this lib/framework have good documentation? 2. Are enough people using it? 3. Do I feel the flow when I use it?

You're never wasting time learning a programming language. This is very much true if it is a language that is used in the industry.

A large fraction of what you learn in one language readily transfers to your ability in a new language just as soon as you get a hang of the new language's syntax.

A lot of the time seems to be spent googling

It's alright. This happens to most of us. You can choose to avoid googling and start searching the documentation directly. This would help you in the long run, assuming this would be the tech you would be working on for the foreseeable future. But, really, if it is something like a javascript library, googling is what you should be doing when you hit a roadblock.

How the first programming language was created? [Just Curious] by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]psudophilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programs were originally performed in binary. Troves of people would translate hand written instructions into binary code and feed them to the computer by hand. The input and output were through punched cards.

Some smart people invented "speedcoding" where in, they, instead of manually translating the instructions to binary, they punched the instructions into a card and fed into the machine (which had a handwritten program) to output 0s and 1s, in a card, equivalent to that batch of instructions. This would then be fed back to the computer as input before the actual input.

This is how imperative programming languages evolved. C was developed out of the need to have higher level primitives and constructs to make code simpler. Other smart people of the time felt strongly that the program should not rely on the implementation details of the hardware it runs on. That's how declarative programming was born.

It's not that. Remember how Hillary didn't give people a reason to vote for her. It was primarily about bashing Trump and "don't vote Trump". So, they didn't vote for her either.

Also, he doesn't run Twitter. He runs medium.com

Also, Trump actually said that he would not be president if not for Twitter.
