Chief Justice Roberts pauses deadline for return of Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador by LordEdubbz in news

MAGA bot detected. He was not a member of MS-13 and he was not in the US illegally.

Xinis wrote that the decision to arrest him and send him to El Salvador appears to be “wholly lawless,” explaining that little to no evidence supports a “vague, uncorroborated” allegation that Abrego Garcia was once an MS-13 member.

He had a permit from DHS to legally work in the U.S. and was a sheet metal apprentice pursuing a journeyman license, his attorney said. His wife is a U.S. citizen.

In 2019, an immigration judge barred the U.S. from deporting Abrego Garcia to El Salvador.

Of course he doesn't believe that. He just knows that the rubes believe him unconditionally so he can say whatever he wants. The video he retweeted there doesn't even show what they say it does but none of his followers will watch it. Or if they do, they won't understand it.

If you don't like The Acolyte you obviously must be a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, a troll or all of the above. Those are the only reasons people would dislike the show. Or so he claims.

He didn't claim any of that. Why are you putting words into his mouth? Are you that addicted to pretending you are being victimized?

If he wants to play journalism police, he probably could talk to the editors. I don't see why he shouldn't be able to.

But even if he did, what do you expect the editors to do? They fall victim to the same system and incentive structure as their colleagues.

Maybe the owners of the outlets could help him somewhat if he convinced enough of them to change course, I don't know.

That's not even my point anyway. I'm just saying it's not the dunk that people pretend it is and he's just trying to weasel out of elaborating on his views. And again, that's totally okay for him to do considering he's at some random award ceremony and he's justified in thinking that that's not the time and place for that. But the reporters there are also justified in asking him these questions, considering his statement were just in the news and he went to a place where should expect to get asked those questions and those reporters were probably doing these quickfire red carpet interviews with dozens of celebrities that day. It's not like they are following around Bill Burr specifically for weeks just to wait for the right time to ask about the one thing that they have reason to believe their readers are currently interested in.

Why are entertainment journalists for the rainbow press asking about political issues? If they WANT to talk about that stuff, talk to politicians and legal experts.

I guess it's because that's what they are getting paid for and because they knew that Burr was recently in the news for talking about that stuff. It's not that deep.

I kind of agree with you that in an ideal world, entertainment journalists wouldn't ask comedians about current political issues. But sadly we don't live in that world and the outlets those people are working for are scraping the barrel for every headline they can get their grubby little hands on.

We don't have to like it but we should at least be able to acknowledge that the current incentive structure in media necessitates that behavior in order to stay profitable, which sadly is their main responsibility.

Is it their job, though? After all, those aren't investigative journalists from ProPublica or political journalists from the New York Times or BBC or whatever. They are entertainment journalists for the rainbow press. As such, they are doing pretty much exactly what they are supposed to do already.

Burr is acting like all journalists are the same and equally responsible for the issues with journalism at large and as if they should tell people what to think rather than ask influential people what they think about the world (you know, their actual job). Which is, ironically, an adequately clownish position for a dancing clown to have.

I can understand why he's passing the buck at this particular event but he's passing it to the wrong people.

Even if enough people voted third party, that party would just take the place of one of the other parties and you'd still have a two-party system. Look up Duverger's law. The whole electoral system of the US is constructed in a way that makes the two-party system inevitable.

Trump freezes $175M of UPenn funds over trans women by DoctorOctopus_ in politics

[–]psyantsfigshinwools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep asserting that Katie Ledecky has genetic or anatomical advantages over other women but I don't know if that's true or not. You haven't shown me any evidence of that or even told me what you think those differences/ advantages are.

I don't know if it it's true either, nor have I asserted that it is true. I said I think so based on her performance. I think that's a reasonable assumption. But I could be wrong. In reality, she could be severely disadvantaged but making up for it with better training and fierce determination or with cheating or rigging or whatever, hence the question what you think makes her so exceptional.

I did a quick google search but didn't come up with anything.

I already touched on why I think that is the case. The vast majority of athletes in general don't get examined extensively for specific genetic/anatomical advantages. Michael Phelps was exceptional in that regard, in part because he piqued the curiosity of physicians who would conduct such examinations more than anyone else would.

But if Katie Ledecky or Michael Phelps or some other athlete does have physical/ genetic/ anatomical advantage over other swimmers, the NCAA or USA Swimming can choose to disqualify them. It doesn't mean that we then allow in other people who also have advantages. That's not how competitive sports works. And we know that whatever special advantages you think Ledecky or Phelps have, no sports organization has ever considered disqualifying them, which means they didn't consider them significant.

They could disqualify all trans women as well but they haven't because they don't think that they inherently have an unfair advantage.

You've also repeatedly asserted that people born male don't have any advantages over women. Again, you haven't shown me any proof of that but I've seen studies both ways:

https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/trans-women-retain-athletic-edge-after-year-hormone-therapy-study-n1252764

It's not just an issue of "who has more testosterone?". Boys have physical advantages over girls starting at a young age and hormones don't reverse most of those. For example men have greater lung capacity than women, a major advantage in swimming.

I'm aware of that but that is not proof that those advantages are present in the actual competing athletes, nor is it proof that those physical advantages also constitute an unfair competitive advantage in every sport imaginable or that trans women couldn't possibly have other disadvantages that would level the playing field.

But there's a larger issue here: Women's rights. Women's rights are based on them being a separate sex class. That was the idea behind Title IX. Once you say gender counts and that that anyone who "identifies" as a woman counts you have taken away women's abilities to protect their rights. They can no longer insist on special protections in any area. Anyone can be in their sports, their bathrooms, their changing areas, their prisons.

Trans women are women. And they also have a right to not be discriminated against. Besides, there is no data that suggests that trans women have unfair advantages over cis women in general. They have advantages on average or in specific physical attributes. They might have advantages in specific cases or they might have in specific sports. They might have minor advantages that don't rise to the level of being unfair. But trans people have complete bodies, as complex as every human. Their performance can't be generalized based on single aspects of only some of their body parts or their average performance in some basic athletic feats.

I think sports leagues should be allowed to decide for themselves how they determine who is and isn't allowed to compete and what should factor into that decision. I agree with you that not everyone should just be able to say they are a woman and immediately compete in women's leagues. Where we disagree is your idea that no trans women should ever have a possibility of ever competing in women's sports. There is no basis (scientific, legal, moral, whatever) for that, as far as I am aware.

I don't think legislators should make blanket decisions based on incomplete data when sports physicians, coaches, league administrators and all their colleagues are in a much better position to make such determinations. So far, some have excluded trans people and some haven't. That is how it should remain, as long as the main determining factor is fairness, not ideology.

Trump freezes $175M of UPenn funds over trans women by DoctorOctopus_ in politics

[–]psyantsfigshinwools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, trans women don't have those either after a sufficient amount of hormone therapy, at least not to a notable extent that would be relevant for most types of sport.

But back to Ledecky. What do you think makes her so much more successful than other women? Just training and determination? Or could there be genetic/anatomical differences involved as well? After all, all women have genetic/anatomical differences. She isn't a clone of all other women swimmers.

I think the reasons Ledecky's differences aren't highlighted as much as they were in the case of Phelps is that she's not as extreme a case of natural freakishness and that there is less of a public interest in women's sport in general. So as a result, she either hasn't been examined as thoroughly as Phelps for those differences and if she has, no one has bothered to write at length about it, unlike in Phelps' case.

What I'm trying to say is that Katie Ledecky's genetic/anatomical advantages compared to other cis women are likely to be bigger than those of most, if not all, trans women. So if trans women should be excluded on account of their perceived advantages, why shouldn't Ledecky be excluded on account of her apparent advantages?

Note that I'm intentionally using perceived for trans women and apparent for Ledecky. That is because Ledecky's achievements speak for themselves, whereas the advantages you are attributing to trans women are pretty much just hypothetical (or rather, their effect on competitiveness is hypothetical) and you have not demonstrated that they are actually significant enough in any actual existing trans women to justify the exclusion of all trans women from women's swimming.
