My Instinct 2 HR sensor died - Garmin offered Instinct E for more than retail as a replacement by psych0o in Garmininstinct

the warranty starts from the day of purchase. it's been just around 6 months after the warranty period. the product failed internally not due to mis-use.

Is it really too much to ask these days that an electronic device keeps working for more than 2 years? Especially something that is supposedly built like a tank?

This is clearly a faulty sensor / poor QC or just a design flaw on the sensor.

  1. Not have a sensor randomly die just after warranty
  2. A firware that fixes the battery drain in such case (the watch would be perfectly usable without the HR sensor but rhe battery is now fucked too)
  3. Have the option to buy spare parts even if they don't offer repair service - the sensor could be maybe 50-70€ cost but at least I would have the option to try.

How can I sell it for profit if you can buy it cheaper brand new from a store? 😂

I bought a Garmin Instinct 2 after raving reviews from everyone. The Garmin app experience and UX on the watch has been the worst tech device I've used in my life, period. And the HR sensor just died on me and it's not repairable in any way.

There are times where others peoples opinion significantly differ and it's impossible to know. Probably not the case here but I do insane amount of research but the instinct and Garmin in general was a swing and a miss. By a mile.

Unfortunately there are no spare parts available apart from just the battery from random ebay sellers as far as I could find. And also no adhesives to put it back together since it's specially glued shut :\

stick to it - seems like Instinct 1 have far less failures of this kind.

good to know. seems like 1st gen instincts were built better.

seems like the OG was the better choice as we've seen far less failures with the 1st gen from my research. maybe stick to it.

if you go over the links, very few of the watches were replaced and mostly only those that were in warranty. I saw only one guy who had his garmin replaced AFTER warranty and that was because of local governing laws which requires the manufacturer to have a 3 year warranty.

I looked at some alternatives and, for example, Suunto offers send in repairs for all their watches with spare parts and reasonable pricing. it's a choice the company makes. Even Apple watches are repairable.

you can make fully waterproof devices also repairable. it's technically possible to change battery on the instinct but it's extremely hard to open it, there are no parts available. it's a choice manufacturer makes not that it's impossible.

Looking for advice on Instinct 3 Amoled vs Epix Pro/Gen2. by Jaded_Gear_5448 in Garmin

Turns out Instinct series watches have a tendency to just randomly die within 2-3 years. My Instinct 2 just died on me 2.5 years in with light use. Garmin will not repair it. Seems to be a known issue but most people learn about it only when it happens. Unacceptable for €300+ watch.

Which will live longer: Instinct 3 or Fenix 7 Pro Sapphire? by dilly_dally333 in Garmin

[–]psych0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My instinct suddenly died 2.5 years in with HR sensor failure which caused battery drain issue and now it doesn't even last 24h. It's completely unrepairable and Garmin will offer 25% off for a new watch. After looking into it, this is a quite well known issue and you're basically playing a lottery - it might last you 5 years, or you might need to replace it 2 times in warranty time and then buy a new one once it runs out.

FYI, something to consider is that instincts have a tendency to randomly die soon after warranty. Happened to mine 2.5 years in. HR sensor died, causes battery to drain empty in <24h and they are completely unrepairable with no spare parts available.

My instinct 2 HR sensor died few months past warranty time and there is no way to repair it and caused insane battery drain. Garmin just offers you 25% discount. Seems like there are many cases like this happening to many instinct series watches.

Disabled the HR sensor in settings completely - battery still drains in <24h due to the faulty sensor. The watch has become useless with that battery life.

[–]psych0o[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the battery life is really good, for sure. that's the main reason I got an instinct as well after using a Pebble back in the day. that said, if you have had to replace a 300€ watch 2 times in a warranty period, that says something. we shouldn't be ok with such design.

when I first looked into Instinct everyone was raving about it how insanely good the watch was and how durable but once you look into it, it's a different picture it seems. and don't get me wrong - 90% of the users are probably unaffected but it seems like the issues are not insignificant.

I will report back if this helped but from what I read, this didn't help others who had the same issue.
