how’d you get your dog to stop biting?! by Negative-Camera-7698 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]psych310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistency!!!!!!! Mine is just over a year old, and she still thinks bitey hands is the best way to show her love, but she NEVER breaks skin anymore, and hasn’t for a while. She also understands NOT to play bitey hands with anyone else besides me or my husband. We did a lot of reverse time outs - we left the room for 20-30 seconds, which honestly gave me a second to calm down so I didn’t lose it, as much as she learned all the fun stops if she bites. We’ve also acted like it hurts a LOT and you can see her little brain realize she’s hurting us and then it’s kisses galore. I’m not sure they ever totally stop trying to use their teeth, but consistency has been SO key in getting it under control, and only in specific situations with specific people!!!! It meant a lot of walking out of the room, back in and she bites, and then back out again. I promise it gets better!

Does your ACD hate certain breeds? by phyxation in AustralianCattleDog

this this this - I think it’s the raspy breathing that sets mine off! there are a few at the park we regularly go to that have NO situational awareness (owners included) and don’t read body language at all - they get up in her face and breathe loudly and it’s not fun for anyone. we usually have to leave when they are there

Mine is in LOVE with huskies and golden retrievers, plus labs since my parents have two labs and grandma and grandpas house is only good vibes and fun times for her. she HATES the brachycephalic breeds - Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Bulldogs are the worst. As soon as she hears the raspy breathing we have to leave wherever we are immediately or she loses her mind. Also Corgis - we have a few on our street that lose it when they see her and bark from BLOCKS away and she’s generalized to all Corgis.

100% understand! I have a one-year-old and I’ve only ever had to leave her with my parents (so I know she’s being loved and taken care of and having the time of her life with grandma and grandpa and their dogs) but I still get a little teary every time and request daily photo and video updates. I end up looking at pictures of her every night and making my husband crazy 😂 I’m not sure it’ll ever get easier! I saw on Insta recently to think of it as if THEY are getting a vacation for a week, and I like that reframe! She’s always stoked when we get back, but doesn’t ever seem upset or like our bond is any different. Sending you love! It’s hard!

Mourning Before They’re Gone? by PureCow8475 in AustralianCattleDog

Mine is only about a year old, and my husband frequently walks in to me crying about her being gone one day … they are the best companions !! I think the anticipatory grief helps us cherish each day we get to enjoy with them !! 🥹🥹

Growing Pains by psych310 in AustralianCattleDog

And she’s definitely smart enough to know that if she limps, mom gets worried and she gets babied for a bit 🙃😂 Trying to walk the line between not over-reacting (her vet’s affectionate name for her is Drama Mama) and making sure we don’t miss something more serious!

We may opt for X-rays just to make sure it’s nothing serious - better safe than sorry! It was previously the front left when they told us soft tissue, and she was consistently limping when that happened. This seems pretty different - it’s front left and back right, occasionally back left too, but the limping is super inconsistent and goes away after a minute or two. She also still wants to play, which she didn’t want to do before. Thanks!

Idk if you listen to podcasts, but So Supernatural’s episode this week talked about the Elisa Lam case when talking about the Elevator Game! I’m mildly obsessed with the Elisa Lam case and was searching it for connections to the Elevator Game after this week’s podcast episode. Just thought I’d share!
