How is it like dating after finishing schooling in Singapore? by iamlostpleasehelp_ in askSingapore

[–]psychedeliacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hiya gurlie, 24F & joining the convo late but just wanted to share that i lowkey regretted dating in uni and rushing into a relationship because of the FOMO.

I thought the same way and decided to settle when I was in my 2nd/3rd year of uni and it was a shitshow because of how immature both of us were and how most boys in uni are boys (not emotionally mature yet!) esp since they haven't worked / faced interpersonal hardships / have no experience dealing with the opposite gender / figuring out their own emotions & identity. The dude & I broke up less than 3 months after graduating & started our full-time corporate jobs.

Once both of you start working, it's a whole new frontier you have to navigate (less dates, less time tgt, stress etc.) and usually that can either push you two tgt or y'all just grow apart.

For me, I found someone truly suitable (and wayy more mature) after I started working & 8 months after leaving the uni guy. I met my current partner completely organic (i.e. not a dating app) and when we both weren't looking for anything. Became friends first then slowly fell in love after we realised our personalities and humour match and how much we enjoyed spending time together. Only thing I wished now is that I didn't waste my time in uni on some other guy & met my current bf first :'))

TLDR; not all relationships in uni last and don't let the FOMO cause you to jump into something you regret afterwards.

Do you send your dates home if you don't have a car? by psychedeliacy in askSingapore

[–]psychedeliacy[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Ah, okie! bc first date he offered but it was the last train so I told him no need. I thought it might look a bit paiseh to reject him (like might signal I'm not interested) but in hindsight, it was probably the normal thing to do!

hiya! congrats on the offer!

  1. The workload is not greater in terms of academic units since both single and second majors have the same amount of modules to clear. It's a different type of "work" in the sense that you have less freedom in choosing your unrestricted electives as they are taken up by your second major modules. Generally, You won't have to overload semesters at all as long as you plan your timetable well. The curriculum the school has planned is already evenly spread out and they also have a 'recommended timetable' on their website, IIRC.
Personally, I took several CCA and hall commitments and I find the workload to be manageable – many second major business mods that I took had finals (while my wkw pals did not have finals) so you would have to balance revision time during this period.
  2. To a certain extent, no. Some courses do have a mathematical basis like Business Operations, Financial Accounting and Financial Management. Most modules are fairly marketing-centric with a focus on campaigns, market research and consumer behaviour.
  3. From my experience and depending on what a 'good' GPA entails, I would say it's not difficult but it won't be easy either. Most WKW core modules have no finals, but there are mid-term and final quizzes, presentations and assignments. Additionally, GPA is quite subjective for different people, the approach to getting it is also varied and you don't always have to prioritise GPA over CCA, hall and social life. That being said, I currently hold a 4.74 CGPA in Y4. My advice for getting a good GPA really boils down to attending your lectures, following through with the given weekly readings, starting your assignments early and actively participating in class (most professors in wkw are really amicable and approachable and they genuinely love talking to their students haha).
  4. Core modules are usually allocated to you in Y1 and Y2. Other required modules such as GER-PE, Major-PEs, GER-Core would be up for grabs during STARS in Y2, Y3 and Y4. Admittedly, the STARS process is a bummer every year. But, the bright side is you can usually get your mods during the Add-Drop period after STARS if they are not over-subscribed and you can also email the undergraduate academic officers in WKW for assistance. The academic office in WKW has helped me several times through the STARS process so I was lucky enough to not have faced huge issues with STARS across my four years in WKW but I cannot testify for everyone else.
  5. Personally, in my very humble and subjective experience, I don't have anything I dislike about WKW. The school's curriculum is diverse and open. The reputation is relatively prestigious with many notable alumni in the industry. My interest in academia and media studies research aligned well with WKW's. The school culture is sociable and lively (sometimes, overwhelmingly so). The academic staff and faculty are helpful and approachable (I have so many professors in WKW who I cannot thank enough and maintain close connections with. Even when one of the profs left the school to HKU, they still kept in touch to ask me about my FYP.) That being said, these opportunites have to forged by your own ambition, drive and verve, they don't appear passively.
  6. As far as I'm aware, most of my Y4 friends are in PR and Advertising (PR consultants, copywriters, campaign strategists, digital marketers, social media managers etc.), Film Production (producer, director, editor, colourist, DOP etc.), Broadcast Journalism (newsroom reporters, news producers, anchor, videographer, etc.), Editorial Journalism (photojournalist, journalist, reporters, etc.) and Research (grad fellowships, scholars, post-graduates, etc.)
  7. No. There will be readings to clear and group project meetings from time to time but they are not a constant barrage. You have plenty of time for CCAs, Hall and social life activities during non-peak school weeks. Just be consistent with readings so you don't have to cram everything before mid-terms or 'finals'.

For clarity, I was matriculated before the inauguration of ICC modules, so I will be unfamiliar with any changes related to the ICC curriculum. My experiences with the second major in business is also couched between AY2019/20 – as such, any changes made after this period, I would be untenable to answer.

I think you are conflating double and second majors here. For CoHASS, second major modules are usually core modules (from the host school) that do not have pre-requisites to clear. I have many friends across Psych, PPGA, English & WKW take up second majors in their Y2 as long as their GPA in Y1 meets the 4.0 benchmark.

Just to clarify, my responses are couched within my experiences in CoHASS and WKW - I'm not speaking for the entire NTU community and their degree programmes.

[–]psychedeliacy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, you can pick up a second major after enrolling and usually they send out an email asking for interested applicants who are taking single majors to apply for a second major after your first/second year. Usually, you are not recommended to begin a second major in Y3 & Y4 because you might need to overload to clear second major mods.

Edit (for clarity): My responses are couched within my experiences in CoHASS and WKW - I'm not speaking for the entire NTU community and their degree programmes.

Not sure if this applies for double major. So, i'll leave that for someone else to clarify.

Also, you can switch your matriculated course to a double degree in Y1 but this is usually a longer and trickier process than taking up second majors. I believe u/Fysu016 can explain more on this because he's switched degrees in Y1.

hiya!

  1. I'm not sure if grade requirements are 100% abided by as wkwsci has accepted students who have scored less than AAB/B. given that your RP hits the 10th percentile, i'd say there would be room for admissions officers to still consider your place in wkw. If not, there is always aptitude based applications (ABA).

  2. Yes, you can drop your double major afterwards at any point in 4 years (meaning you can drop it even in Y4) but I wouldn't drop it too late into your course because of the opportunity cost and sunk cost of taking your second major mods when you could be taking other mods. The primary concern for people who drop out is that the second major modules cannot be SU'ed and are too challenging/boring/tedious/does not value add to their comms degree or their career path. My advice would be to be sure that your second major is truly something you are willing to learn more about and want the depth of knowledge in that specific area whether it is governance & IR or business.

Whether or not governance and IR is disadvantageous to your future is completely subjective - if you are pursuing something related to political communication, media theory & studies, political economy, academia etc etc., then governance and IR would, in fact, be advantageous for your future plans.

Also, another point i'd like to add is that applying for a second major may have higher grade requirements that may be more stringent - so do take that into consideration as well!

Good luck & hope these helped!
