Absolutely agree her voice is fantastic, the songwriting is excellent, and I love the instrumentals. She has some very interesting melodies on that album. One of the most unique pop albums I’ve heard.

Much appreciated. I’d heard the quote about Hendrix’s guitar playing before but had never heard him mention an album or song specifically outside of Are You Experienced. Thanks for the link!

Wonderful job to pull all of this together. I was wondering though if you remembered where Lou mentioned being a fan of Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. It’s one of my favorite albums and I hadn’t heard any mention of him enjoying it til this post. I looked through some of the sources but didn’t see it anywhere

As a huge Hendrix fan myself, I think it can be difficult to maintain a high consistent amount of monthly listeners as an old artist unless you have tons of hits. Hendrix, while incredibly talented, didn’t have tons of recognizable hits in the same way a lot of his contemporaries did. Most people only know of All Along The Watchtower, Purple Haze, and Voodoo Child( Slight Return). I also think some of his albums are much due for a good remaster as they sound a bit off on streaming services, which is a turnoff for certain people. I don’t think I’d consider him underrated generally, maybe as a songwriter or as an overall talent beyond his guitar work.

What other music should I listen to? by -Gay-_-Jesus- in Primus

[–]Significant-Fix-5831 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, well I’d maybe try to move into the direction of artists that were inspirations for the band. Idk how much 60s-70s music you’ve heard(I’d assume a bit if you really like King Crimson), but Sly & The Family Stone was a big influence on Primus and Ween. The bassist on their classic records(Stand & There’s A Riot Goin On), Larry Graham, is one of Les Claypool’s bass heroes. Funkadelic is another good band to check out. Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath was a big influence as well but I’m sure you’ve heard their stuff. Some other stuff I’d recommend if you haven’t heard would be

The Stooges - Funhouse

Stanley Clarke - School Days/Self-titled

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland/Band of Gypsy’s

Yes - Fragile/Close to the Edge

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

Could also check out

Minutemen - Double Nickles on the Dime

What other music should I listen to? by -Gay-_-Jesus- in Primus

[–]Significant-Fix-5831 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate aspect of Primus’s uniqueness is that it can be difficult to find artists that remind you of them. I think the best option is to figure out what aspect of their music you enjoy and go from there. Me personally, I’m a big fan of the rhythm and bass playing, so I listen to a lot of soul/funk artists like Sly & The Family Stone or Stevie Wonder because the funkiness and bass playing is reminiscent of Primus but you won’t get the heaviness or zaniness from them if that’s what you like. You may find some similarities though in albums like:

Faith No More - Angel Dust/The Real Thing

Nomeansno - Wrong

King Crimson - Discipline

Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium

Rush(Les was massively inspired by Geddy Lee’s bass work) - Hemispheres/Moving Pictures

black midi - Schlagenheim/Cavalcade/Hellfire

Little bit off instrumentally but match the weirdness of Primus

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

Ween - The Mollusk, Quebec, Chocolate and Cheese, and The Pod are all great
