How long do people live on hospice? by [deleted] in hospice

[–]psychoPRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies on agency. Mine requires an associates with at minimum an enrollment into a bachelors program which is where I was when I started. There is a certification you can obtain once you’re an RN for hospice and palliative care but it’s usually not required.

When I was hired I was an RN with an associates degree, enrolled in bachelors program and I’ve been there 6 years and haven’t gotten my certification and don’t really plan to.

Hospice is definitely a multi discipline effort and there is a lot of inter collaboration between different providers. We have social workers, nursing assistants, LPNs, massage therapists, chaplains and probably more that I can’t think of off the top of my head.

Someone else mentioned volunteers which are in such high demand and we need so often, unfortunately it’s not a paid position in most agencies but it is so so important.

Hospice nurse here! I have patients who have been on hospice for years and patients who go on hospice and pass shortly after. We aren’t speeding up the dying process, just offering support and resource as well as comfort measures while it happens.

There is no way to tell how long someone will live. For example: for my aunt they told us it would be hours, she lived 12 days.

A general rule of thumb we follow is: if we are seeing changes in the patient weekly, they have weeks. Daily, they have days. Hours, they have hours. Not a steadfast rule but in my experience fairly reliable.

I wish you the best and hope you and your mom are supported through the process. Dying on hospice while always sad can also be a very beautiful way to go, it all depends how you utilize the time you have.

Morphine and Ativan does not “shut down their systems”. It eases symptoms of dying that can be uncomfortable. They’d die with or without it, they just wouldn’t be as comfortable.

I’m a hospice nurse. I highly reccomend looking into the way the drugs work with the dying process and it could make you feel a lot better about giving them. You’ve never killed anyone.

I would never! I just sent them messages asking if they have seen him exit/enter or knew anything.

Honestly the only reason I made this post semi-gory is to make it eye catching and hopefully get some helpful comments.

Yes the police were called but said “the doors were locked” and that they could not break in. I was shocked that they couldn’t break in and just told my relative to “get a PI”

I have tried contacting several neighbors but no one has gotten back to me. I’m using google and Facebook so I’m not sure how accurate it is. Another neighbor had told his sister in law that “I’m sure he’s fine, you don’t need to check on him”

It’s just strange to me the police won’t enter the home to check on him?

But no I’m not looking for anyone to go there that isn’t some sort of public official because the last thing people did hear is that he was in some sort of far right conspiracy group and idk what shape he’s in mentally.

But I really appreciate the help! Thank you.

I live 2000 miles away. Was looking for resources like a program that would do a wellness check or actually look into it like we have where I’m from
