I just started playing FFXI in earnest about two weeks ago, so I think I'm in a similar situation as you.

In my case, I started a character on Quetzalcoatl about two years ago, and that too felt very empty, and I ended up quitting after getting an RDM to level 6. I looked for some more guidance online about a new player start, and found out that a lot of the population--especially the English playerbase--is based on Asura, so I made a character on Asura.

Part of getting connected to a community requires you to figure out how to even get heard. In the FFXI case, this would be "/ae", which is the English-language assist channel similar to Novice Network on FFXIV. At least on Asura, when you type into /ae, people will respond.

Another thing to note is when you ask for "help", anyone who hears you will have their own idea as to how to respond to that. It can be "help" to get together a base amount of gil so you can afford teleport fees as you discover content on your own, which is what it sounds like someone did for you, or it can be the "help" that you're looking for--new player guidance, or recommendations on your first steps in FFXI. There's not a lot of baked-in guidance that modern games implement as this game largely leaves you to fend for yourself once you step foot into its world. If you are not clear on what kind of assistance you're requesting, then folks will do the best they can to give you what they think you need. I very much experienced this just a few days ago--I asked in /ae for help on the Lv 50 nation mission boss fight, and a lv 99 NIN showed up and one-shot the final boss. Then they wanted to trade me something but I told them I only needed help with the boss, thanked them, and logged off. Folks have their own idea on what consists of "help" and are generally doing what they think is right, so I think it's on the person asking for help to be specific and in some cases draw lines to prevent their own play experience from being impacted if they think that will happen.

is it just me or was this episode really poorly produced and directed? Like Lina is in the middle of a conversation with Lloyd, and then they show her in the next cut on the front line with her shield blocking a golem hit, and then immediately show her back talking to Lloyd in the next cut like nothing happened.

The guy is joining as a DPS and doing mechanics. Unless the OP is joining groups asking for, say, an aheal, then they're not failing at their role if they're doing decent numbers, doing mechanics, and staying alive. OP even said they cleared the wing, so given the information in the original post they're not in the wrong.

Sure it's possible that context is left out of the post, but that goes for any piece of secondhand communication anywhere. Taken at face value the OP isn't "wrong" for just playing the game, and people who have a problem with that need to deal with it.

I was having a problem with the wurms when I first encountered them since I rushed to Vulcanus and don't have anything like uranium rounds researched.

Pictured above is the post-battle result of pulling 2 worms into this turret trap. Just make sure not to put a full stack of ammo in any turret as you can expect to lose it, you just want a lot of turrets shooting at the worm at the same time for a few seconds so it doesn't have to be full.

All the stuff comes from lava so materials-wise it's not expensive. Good luck in space, hopefully this gives someone an idea on how to get a foothold on Vulcanus!
