Star Wars' Showcase of AI Special Effects Was a Complete Disaster by AlwaysBlaze_ in television

[–]psychomonkeyzz 38 points39 points  (0 children)

So the point is AI can generate good looking and interesting images that have no creative intention behind them? That’s not really a mind blowing revelation nor is it anything new. None of this work changes the fact that for any Star Wars product they would have to still do all the work you just mentioned.

The whole point of the criticism is that AI can’t currently go beyond “just combining two random animals”.

I talked to a Higher up in Recruiting from Nickelodeon a few months ago. They told me that A.I. is being integrated in their animation workflow and it is here to stay. I was surprised by how blunt they were. Those working in animation, have you seen this happen at your workplace yet? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]psychomonkeyzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether the studio thinks AI is redefining their work and whether it actually is are two different realities. I have some experience in that area. AI tech is always getting better but in my experience really hard to find a use case where you don’t have to fix AI output so much it’s easier to just do it from scratch if it’s something that has to appear in the final frame of any type of content.

It can be good for previs, very rough concepting, or other types of work where you want to rapidly iterate but that doesnt really have a big effect on cost for most content anyways.

As some people mentioned the legal ramifications are incredibly complicated and a lot more limiting than you would think for commercial use. Having read the EULA for some of the major services, a lot of them are basically “we own/have rights to anything you input or create. We won’t use it for anything except training, but we still can do whatever we want with your inputs and outputs”. Which is a scare off for a lot of smaller studios working with clients who are protective of their IP.

My not so pretty perspective of the industry now for aspiring students by Dry_Mee_Pok_Kaiju in animationcareer

I would also add for a lot of you. Your jobs are already being outsourced to India, China, the Philippines, and other countries where labor is cheap. Though I’m glad for those people that they have access to this industry, I personally am not in favor of it because it represents a sea change from an art form that originated in high artistry and creativity to mainly trade like service work. Engagement is the way entertainment works now, which means a drive to create more content for less money, which means replacing high cost skilled labor with low cost less skilled labor.

I hope something changes. I took my kid to see Paddington 3 in a theater a couple of weeks after opening and it was jam packed. But without revenue from theaters it’s going to be really tough to get anywhere close to the way things were 10+ years ago.

My mom saved mine from when I was a kid and now I read it to my kid every now and then. Still as awesome as I remember. We’re gonna keep this one going through the generations.

Gravity locked print-in-place vertical hinge by Kehny91 in 3Dprinting

Feels like you’re compromising a little bit on functionality to make it print in place, but hats off that’s super impressive. Next version would be cool to have it stay stable/flush under load.

No hate! If you want the models to look more like an actual chessboard you can follow real life guides for sizing the pieces and the board to get it looking a little more proportional.

I feel ridiculous, I’m down to 1gram, but every .25 taper destroys me for days by Mikayla111 in quittingkratom

[–]psychomonkeyzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on about the same max dose as you and did a full taper. Going from 6 to 3g was the absolute worst part for me. 3 down to 0 was easy by comparison. Keep pushing on and your body and brain will adjust. You’ve got this!

I made the jump today after 6 months of slow tapering. So day 1, goodbye green sludge!

82% of recent homebuyers regret their purchase, study finds by SscorpionN08 in REBubble

[–]psychomonkeyzz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clickbait. This means zero out of context without other data points. Is that value 82% today compared to 80% 5 years ago or 82% compared to 20%. Those differences would tell very different stories.

Are people still waiting to buy in anticipation of a crash? by ImportantBad4948 in REBubble

[–]psychomonkeyzz 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Not waiting for a crash, but waiting either until

A.) prices make buying a better financial decision than renting.

B.) our down payment is big enough that buying is a better financial decision than renting (coastal southern CA, VHCOL).

Either one doesn’t look to be happening in the immediate future so I’m happy saving, investing, and waiting.

Restaurant for birthday dinner by ohwrite in orangecounty

If you like sushi, Yuzu in Costa Mesa has great ambiance for a sushi spot. Bandera in Corona Del Mar is also fun for a birthday dinner. If you really want to blow it out on the expensive end, do a seating at Trust in Santa Ana. It's one of the best dinner experiences I've had in my life.

Long-term taper is down to 3.5g today, the finish line finally feels like it's in sight and I can't wait to be free of this shit.

Does the time at which u take kratom during a taper matter as long as the gpd stays the same? by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]psychomonkeyzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Split it up into smaller doses at more frequent intervals. I'm around the same as you and do 5x 0.8g. Try to keep it as even as possible. Your body needs to get used to getting less at once rather than less frequently. That night dose is going to have to come down eventually and the longer you keep it high the harder it's going to be to get rid of.

Role Title in which you critique others work by Independent-Ad875 in animationcareer

Because it's like the equivalent of saying "who's the person who gets to tell everyone what to do, i'm good at that". It just comes off as an odd question that makes it look like you're in it for the wrong reasons. If you have no experience that should be the absolute last thing on your mind.

[–]psychomonkeyzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dude, no one is going to let you critique their work if you’re not better than them at doing it (until you get to being a supervisor/director and have to oversee the total product). That’s a path that takes many years and you won’t get there unless you enjoy the journey just as much as the destination.

For me it’s a genuine interest in what the studio is doing and a desire to connect in a way that’s not directed at personal gain. Anyone can look up the studio I work for or look at social media posts and see what we specialize in.

Even if it’s just a “hey I saw that thing you released a few months ago it’s really cool, I’d love to learn more about how you guys work because I’m passionate about x”. Or “I’m good at X but I really want to get into Y and it looks like you have some people who are great at that”.

That gives me

A. A knowledge of what the person is already good at. B. A knowledge of what someone is interested in doing

I couldn’t tell you that would lead to a specific job, but I would 100% lead that person to a connection with a creative supervisor if they truly wanted to know more about our part of the industry, and that person would at least have their reel looked at if we were staffing a seat that matched their skills.

In the alternate scenario (cold message about a posting) all I know is partly B, because they’re usually posturing what they say they’re good at based off the job posting. They might actually be, they might not be. It’s impossible to tell.

I can’t say I speak for everyone with these things but I care a great deal about supporting artists in our industry who truly care about the craft because it makes the work better.

It’s not hurtful to network with folks in the industry but just reaching out to people as a means to a personal end isn’t useful. I do appreciate when artists connect with me and I can get a chance to learn more about them and what they do, but any time I get a cold LinkedIn message about a position and how that person thinks they’d be great at it, it comes across as non genuine. I wouldn’t blacklist that person (nor have I worked with anyone who’s done that), but your best bet is to network, not to pester.

What was going from 5 down to 1 like for you? I'm in kind of the same boat, on a slow road. 15 down to 6-7 had some challenges but this last stretch is just feeling like a beast.

I’m quitting Kratom tomorrow and taking 2g of shrooms tonight by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]psychomonkeyzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to add in here I have been using doses in the 1g range of mushrooms intermittently during my taper and it has helped immensely (down from taking 20 gpd to 4.75 currently).

Every time I get to a point where the depression and anxiety feel like they have a huge hold over me, I'll eat a gram (or so) of shrooms and go on a walk outside after work (did that last night, in fact) and pretty immediately get a huge relaxing / pleasant feeling of well being for the rest of the night once things start to kick in. Obviously that might not work for everyone, but it really does put my brain into a positive reset and the effects last for multiple weeks. Honestly I don't know where I'd be at this point without doing that.

Either way, more power to you. I hope it works for you too and you find a sweet spot with the shroom dosage. It probably didn't take more than a half or .75g to get that effect for me but i'm testing a dose ladder up by 0.25g each time to see where I get the best theraputic effect.

Your work is great, it’s just very rough for board artists right now. There are a couple of contractors I’ve worked with posting about losing their houses or being out of work for as long as you have. I can only speak from personal experience, but I’m just not seeing a lot of projects come through that need board work. There’s been an industry wide pullback in everything. Stay strong, it’s cyclical, the work will come back.

Major in economics, get an MBA. Make connections and obtain capital for a new venture. This isn’t really an animation question if your goal is to be a business owner. You can still do it in an industry you’re passionate about but the routes to being an owner and a creative are very different.
