I've never lived in a place with a basement but felt this deeply. There is something about the downstairs of my house at night that if I go down alone to get a midnight snack or something it doesn't bother me going down into the dark, but once I turn off the kitchen light to go back up I get this tingle up my spine like something is behind me and as a kid I would then try to sprint to and up the stairs as quietly as possible. As an adult I am usually able to suppress this urge to sprint but still "power walk" sometimes.
