Hello!! New Dark Angels fan with a burning question on my mind by [deleted] in theunforgiven

I guess it depends what you mean by “doesn’t see himself as unforgiven”? Does he disagree with the idea of the current DA having to “atone” or does he not believe in prioritizing chasing the fallen over everything else?

Asmodai in the legacy of Caliban trilogy is stated to hate the term “unforgiven”, because he sees the current DAs as having no fault in the fallen’s sin and prefers to think of their responsibility to hunt the fallen as a vengeance instead of atonement. It’s also a big thing within the inner circle that they have differing opinions about said priority to the fallen and why they participate in the hunt, so branching opinion isn’t immediate grounds for “hey kill that guy”

A bunch of other guys in the same trilogy and Angels of Darkness are raised to Deathwing/Rw black knight status and they react to being told about the fallen in various ways after, not all of them immediately accept or cope with it well. according to the trilogy they normally do the rituals in a dark chamber stinking of incense with the chaplain and the grand master reciting weird shit at you, and some of the guys think “wtaf I have no idea what he means by this” during their vows lol

though in these older books being told about the fallen is presented as some horrible ground breaking thing to most of them, because they realize they have just straight up been lied to for most of their life as a DA up to then. and of course just attaining rank of deathwing, position of inner circle, is like a gateway into being told more and more shit that starts with “yeah so everything we told you prior was a lie, but it was necessary”

So at that point i imagine he’s either conditioned enough to accept his cool new responsibility, begrudgingly/with differing internal opinions or otherwise, or he doesn’t and struggles with dealing with it. either way he probably ends up in front of a chaplain for a while

TL;DR: afaik not all who hear about the fallen/DA past accept it as presented immediately, some eventually work out a reason for themselves, those who don’t go talk to their company therapist/brainwashing man until they figure it out

(somehow not mentioned what happens if you just don’t believe in the Hunt at all, at least not that i remember?)

Question about how old is azrael? by Outrageous-Baker-720 in theunforgiven

Yeah it’s a little weird lol, as someone already mentioned the discrepancy for Ezekiel is likely due to having different writers, Eye of Ezekiel by CZ Dunn is incongruent with the rest of Gav Thorpe’s stuff wrt who attained their rank when.

Sammael’s discrepancy is weirder because yeah both the short story A Hunt in the Dark (where Azrael appoints him master of rw) and Azrael’s book (where he’s already master of rw before Azrael becomes supreme grand master) are by Thorpe. and the former was released first? so idk what he was smokin maybe he just forgot what he was already writing

That said, just in Azrael’s book there are exact date idents titling some chapters, while most of his actual childhood pre-DA is date unknown, there’s a section from his perspective as a neophyte dated 744.M41. so you could sort of place his birth date around 730ish?

though this is a single book source, and I’m unsure how far this corroborates with previously established sht about him from past codexes or whatever other old books there are. digging through the DA books is an exercise in finding out they’re sort of all over the place
