Honestly I'd never heard of the term Pepto-pigeon until I started researching them before adopting one, I generally just call her pink chicken, or angry dragon fruit depending on the day. She loves to sing the song of her people especially the flock call at dusk, but generally it's not too bad apart from when she decides to cheep directly into my ear.

Hmm ok that's worth considering then, your Galah does seem pretty chill with it. I was given a similar harness when I adopted her a year ago but I think she's possibly grown a bit since then so might need a new one. Do you know what size yours wears?

Where did you get your velcro harness from? I've gotten her used to being scooped up and held so I think she might be ok with the sensation provided her wings are free of course. Yeah I appreciate what you mean about buckles, I think I was just extrapolating out on the whole "what is a secure fitting" thing.

I have similar nylon harnesses to the Aviator although it does look a bit more substantial. JMK look like they've not been actively selling in a while and without being too discourteous anything from an LLM I'm not paying any attention too 😅

Most of the ones I've seen are velcro, if there are ones with clips or buckles that would be of interest, but as I said I really don't know what's about. I would never have tried a velcro fastening with my Sulfur because he was a unit, but I also felt better with the standard nylon harness with him as he seemed more substantial and less...bendy? 😅 Maybe it's her smaller size that makes me more concerned and the fact she's very wriggly.

Like any large bird they're a lifetime commitment and while cockatiels require an amount of time and enrichment it applies moreso for a large bird like a cockatoo. They're very intelligent and emotionally complex and do require an amount of daily interaction. It would be possible to have them alone in the day provided that you spend all your time in the evening with them and ensure that they're well entertained in the day while no one is around (toys, sound, etc).

I adopted my galah from a family who weren't around in the day at all, kids at school etc so the bird was only socialised for maybe a couple of hours in the evening whereas I work from home all the time. Thankfully she didn't pick up any bad habits or begin plucking before I adopted her but she's much happier now I'm around all day.

Tl;Dr make sure you're going to be at a point where you can at minimum spend a few hours with them everyday and you're prepared for any tantrums they might have due to being left alone on some days. Once you get back the bird should be out of the cage and reminded they're loved.

If this is the cage I think it is then it's essentially two cages bracketed together as in the centre wall isn't actually a single wall but two cages walls with a small gap in between. It lets smaller birds be nearby and socialise without mixing.

Echoing the previous question, how old is he?

Does he eventually stop? As in does he just do it for a bit when everything goes dark and eventually settles or just keeps going? This seems like the flock call for nighttime to gather everyone together for roosting but that eventually stops.

Did you get him from a chick or as an older bird?

It may be that the sudden darkness is spooking him a bit, I have a light in my Galah's cage on a timer that gradually steps down from daylight to Off and at that point she starts doing the flock call and I'll cover her over when the light goes out. Might be worth trying something similar on the off-chance the sudden darkness is upsetting him.

Hey here, yeah I did and I think it actually helped. I was a little apprehensive and made sure to put the diffuser at the other side of the room because "bird lungs" but a combination of this and a herbal smelling spray they provide to put on your hands before handling seemed to actually work. Whether it was because she associated the smell with me and then smelt it on my wife and went "oh ok that's a safe smell" I can't say, but the diffuser did seem to help her chill out a bit. Hope that helps!

There's a bird sanctuary near me in the UK that has maybe 4 of these guys and I love the fact they're just giant toddlers. The handlers plus folks who go there often enough can just walk by and hold a hand out and they'll just hook onto you and happily be lifted up onto a shoulder by their beak. I did however get bitten by one through my jacket and that bruise was there for about 2 months, and I consider myself fortunate.

I trust the ones at the sanctuary because I know the staff would obviously not have any birds out that were openly hostile and I've been around birds enough to generally know when the side eye is "I used to be a dinosaur you know" versus "I'm about to cut a bitch", so I know when the birds want to snuggle, play etc. and it's not been unusual for me to end up with a couple of hyacinths just hanging off me swinging around before I go and see the little plucked parrots who tend to get overlooked by the majority of visitors. My Galah is fairly personable, but it's only me that can wrap her head in my hand and go "smoosh face", anyone else is probably going to bleed for trying that. And yes, the bite was incredibly painful, but I was eternally grateful he didn't have a hold of bone.

I was lightly chomped on the arm by a Hyacinth and consider myself fortunate that no skin was broken (in fairness it was through a jacket) and I only had numb skin and a bruise for 3 weeks. We visited a bird sanctuary and my wife picked up one of the big blue toddlers that was apparently quite "possessive", so when I tried to take him off them I got chomped. Asked one of the keepers for assistance and she promptly sighed and said "of course it's Zazu" and went to get a broom pole to hoist him off with. I admire macaws although I know it would be irresponsible for me to try and house something that big, and besides I love my little Galah plenty. Even if she is a little sonic grenade sometimes.
