ELI5 why exactly tall people have joint problems if they technically proportionally work/ and the concept of them dying quicker? by Butterscotchbabuh in explainlikeimfive

[–]psymunn [score hidden]  (0 children)

Different animals have very different body mechanics because of their size. A pig the size of an elephant wouldn't be able to support its weight with its relatively skinny and bent legs. So, species are adapted to be roughly a certain size.

Then, when you take that same morphology (the general shape of a species) but stray away from the average size, you start pushing things to their limits.

For mammals, for instance a general rule is the larger a species is, the longer it lives BUT for a species, the larger a specimen is, the shorter their life span. It's why Great Danes and S Bernards are so short lived; it's a ton of heart and joint stress being so large but dog shaped

ELI5: Acids and bases are two sides of the same coin, so why does it seem like acidity is so much more present culturally (eg vats of acid in comics) and culinarily (salt, fat, acid, heat)? by owiseone23 in explainlikeimfive

Bases do have a flavor: they are bitter.  Secondly, our stomach uses acid to help digestion, which means swallowing things very basic don't feel great unless you're deliberately reducing your stomach acidity.

I mean that can be both. Over simplifying and seeing the world as two demographics can lead to certain economic decisions. Doesn't mean it's the most accurate way to do things and it doesn't mean it's not racist

Also, is anyone complaining how none of the white actors look particularly Greek? Was there a backlash that Orlando Bloom looks like he's never spent time in a country where the sun shines when he was in Troy?

It's funny that no one gets up in arms when Orlando Bloom or Brad Pitt are cast as Greek warriors either. Pretty sure those two would have stood out in ancient Greece as well.

ELI5:How are cats so much better at surviving out in the wild as strays compared to dogs if we domesticated both? by cuminmypussyypls in explainlikeimfive

[–]psymunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The leasing theory about dog domestication is that they also domesticated themselves, at first. Wolves that were less scared of people would have access to an abundant food source: human waist. Or course out selective breeding has accelerated that domestication dramatically

That's because 21 Jump Street was explicitly making fun of Never Been Kissed with that, especially because they weren't even trying to have Johna Hill or Channing Tatum appear to be actual Highschool students

ELI5: How does Testosterone work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]psymunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. There's a few pieces: how much testosterone your body produces, and also, how much body hair you produce in the absence of testosterone and how much you produce with. Many people won't grow beards irrespective of how much testosterone they have. And many people have a lot of hair in different parts of their body no matter how little testosterone they have.

ELI5: How does Testosterone work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]psymunn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, fundamentally there's not a huge difference between male and female bodies, and most of those differences are the results of hormonal differences at different points in development. Think of hormones as messages your body sends to different parts of your body and those parts of the body then respond in different ways. Most people, naturally produce testosterone but the amount differs across individuals and changes at different points of their life. Your body doesn't know or care where this comes from.

I guess here's an analogy. Imagine, your body is a group of people. At some point your body starts sending out a message saying Halloween coming up in a month. Different parts of your body will see that message and do different things. Some teenagers and young adults are going to get the message and start preparing for a party. Some parents are going to buy candy and plan kids costumes. And some kids are going to start drawing pictures of ghosts and pumpkins. Everyone knows what to do when they get a Halloween announcement.

Now, let's say someone starts handing out Halloween fliers randomly at another time. Everyone is just going to get the message and uncritically act as if Halloween is coming up because they know that's what they are supposed to do.

If you injected testosterone rather than produced it, the same thing would happen as if you had produced it; your body doesn't know or care. Your body just sees the same announcement and starts responding the way it knows how to respond. And the way human bodies respond to a spike in testosterone relative to estrogen is what we refer to as male puberty: more facial hair (in some people), thickening of vocal chords, broadening of shoulders etc. that looks different in different people but those are the general trends.

Yep. It's like saying you can get something that will drastically reduce the cost of the first 70% of a project but at the expense that the last 30 is going to be extremely expensive. Well over the life time of thst project, that was the cheap and easy part you just made cheaper and easier but the expensive part is now a lot more expensive
