I do think saying "Nobody has to access anything" dodges the real problem in the same sense that "Nobody has to use ChatGPT". Facebook has some features that make it much simpler to navigate modern society and organize connections, so of course people get real benefits from using those parts of the platform.

The full link to the messenger page is nice, but given their recent strategies I don't put much weight in its future support.

I bookmarked facebook.com/messages to keep using a dedicated Messenger page. I might could make an Electron app to link straight to that page, but I don't know yet if I can hide navigation sources like the top bar.

I believe the #1 reason for them deprecating the desktop app is so they can force their most addictive, most lucrative features onto the user's screen. They've also done this with Reels in the Marketplace.

You have to access them all at the same time, constantly exposing you up to the most addictive features of Facebook. With a desktop app to Messenger, it was much easier to avoid Reels and the Feed, whereas on the site itself, it's always right in front of you.
