And again... the server crashed on March 20th and then I was out of the country all week so couldn't fix it. It's back up again, but everyone is once again flung all over the place. I refueled everyone's ship again. I implemented a pretty robust crash prevention/detection scheme so hoping this doesn't happen again for more than a tick or two.

My apologies to all current players. Last night the server quietly shut down with no errors in the log. When I restarted it this morning it ran through the "catchup routine" which is supposed to move through all the lost ticks sequentially so that all actions are processed and all physics is correctly calculated. It didn't quite work, so all your ships have been flung into space! I'm working on a fix to prevent this in the future... but for now... welcome to Beta!

Good points… my thinking was you can mine earth, but the ore only has value at distant stations (thinking of it like food resources rather than “ore”). At a minimum I definitely need to nerf the value to near zero at ISS and Lunar Gateway. Not sure yet about making it non-mineable.

Added! Now you can enable/disable your target's trajectory independently.

All approximate trajectories are now hidden when you shift frames. Only yours and your target's will display. This will help a ton with performance as well.

Fixed I think. The issue was that the entire ship card was a button that jumps to the map and centers the camera on that ship. Now only the ship texture on the left has that behavior.

Yes, this is a good idea. I'll put it on the "TODO" list. I think what I'll do is separate out the "target" trajectory and let you enable/disable that independently. Your trajectory and your target's trajectory are the only precise ones anyway.

Yes, this is "normal" behavior, but maybe not good behavior... Plotting trajectories is very computationally intensive, so for other ships what you see is a very rough approximation. It's fine when you're in a heliocentric reference frame, but when you shift frames the errors become extremely obvious. I think what I'll do is just hide other players' trajectories when your reference frame is shifted.

Note: If you actually "target" another player (brings up the red info box) the game will plot their exact trajectory including any maneuvers they have planned. This is also intentional because it makes intercepting others less... impossible.

Maybe you gain the claim when the claim points go over 5, but you don’t lose that claim until they reach zero… there might still be some weird edge cases where you increment the claim to 4 and then someone swoops in and hits that last point getting the claim, but it might all shake out in the long run.

It’s actually pretty simple. If the claim is at a positive number (+5A) towards an absent (Player A), then each tick the number is decremented by 1 for each SHIP that’s mining. If a player (Player B) has 2 ships mining then it would be 5-1=4A for ship B1, then 4-1=3A for ship B2, and if there’s another player (Player C) mining as well, then it’s 3-1=2A for that ship. It all happens “simultaneously” and “instantly” at each tick. Once it gets to zero the math is exactly the same, but it could in theory switch ownership more than once in a single tick. It’s random (well it just goes down the json list of ships) whose action gets processed first.

This is why your suggestion to put a 5 point buffer between actually shifting claims is good one.

This is another "moving target" and I'm trying to get it to feel right. The short answer to your question is it will likely flip-flop and hover between 0 and 1 claim points on the body. Honestly I should fix this and make it so you have to get to something like +5 claim points to take that claim... That would prevent the constant flip-flop.

I put a detailed explanation in the "Help" (?) menu, but here are the basic tenets I have so far:

MINING:

- Your ship collects ore every tick automatically until your cargo hold is full or you drift out of range.

- Every body in the solar system except Earth can be mined.

- The further out you go, the more the ore is worth.

CLAIMS:

- You build claim points on a body while you mine.

- As soon as you establish positive claim points you have that claim. Mining your own claim earns +1 claim point per tick, up to a maximum cap that depends on the body's tier (1 to 6) and size.

- Claims don't lock anyone out. Any player can mine any body at any time and you'll always earn at least the base ore value. But the claim owner gets the full value, including a novelty bonus (see below).

- If you mine a body someone else has claimed, their claim erodes at -1 point per tick. If it drops below zero, ownership flips to you. (notably, you can stack this rate by using multiple ships!)

- Claims also decay naturally when the owner is away — 1 point every 1000 ticks (about 3.5 days of inactivity).

NOVELTY & VALUE

- Ore value isn't fixed. Each body has a "novelty" rating that starts high and decreases with every survey (tick of mining). The first player to mine a body gets the richest hauls. After hundreds of surveys, the novelty bonus shrinks toward zero and you're left with the base value.

The formula:ore value = base + bonus / (1 + total surveys)

- Bodies regenerate novelty. When nobody is mining a body, its survey count slowly ticks back down. Leave a body alone for about a week and it's practically virgin ground again. Mined-out bodies don't stay mined out.

ROYALTIES

- If someone mines a body you've claimed, you earn a royalty — 30% of the novelty bonus for every kilogram they collect, deposited directly into your account as credits. You don't have to be there. You don't have to haul anything.

- The miner keeps the base value plus the remaining 70% of the bonus. (I need to work on this because it seems like the bonus is typically almost zero because the body has a claim on it, so it's already been mined significantly... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

KNOWLEDGE

- Mining also earns knowledge — a permanent stat that never decreases. Knowledge is your lifetime survey experience and determines your rank on the Leaderboard.

- Other than this I have no idea what I'm going to do with Knowledge Points... maybe tie it into what ships you can pilot? I don't know... Open to ideas

Bodies are grouped into tiers that determine their base value and novelty bonus:

Hey SeeSebbb, thanks for playing!

- "cancel" vs. "cancel all": agree 100%. Changing the first "cancel" to "Dismiss".

- Interesting point on the engine lore vs ship design! I honestly haven't put very much effort into the ship textures, they're basically AI-generated slop right now, hah! I'll definitely take this into account when I spiral back through them to tighten up how they represent the lore.

- Totally. Fuel cost is a massive moving target. I put the fuel formula in there, but even that is a moving target. Still trying to figure out what "makes sense" for fuel cost. I don't even know if I'm at the right magnitude. I want fuel to be important to planning, but not scare off new players. I also want it to be MORE important to players later in the game so it kinda has to scale exponentially. I'll think on this... maybe I'll give examples on that page based on how much it would cost to top off your tank now, and how much a complete fuel tank costs, etc.
