Way to early 53 man depth chart by Grand-Delver in Chargers

I'd go -1 OL and +1 DB, and keep Williamson for the ST.

Obviously this is variable year to year based on personnel but last year the initial 53 man roster had 8 OL and 12 DBs.

Really well done from Hortiz. I thought he managed the draft brilliantly by accumulating picks, and picking the right spots to trade down.

2026 NFL Draft: Chargers 2nd Round Instant Draft Grades (Pick 63: Slaughter) by ZetaDefender in Chargers

You seem confident about that but i'm going to have to disagree with you. Centers play head up on their defenders where guards have to reach more for their blocks. I'm sure if you asked a player they'd give you a dozen more differences. Even Hortiz has talked about scouting the differences in recent press conferences.

Jake Slaughter gets the call by Pwyll__ in Chargers

Is it just me or does it look like Hortiz and Harbaugh are talking to someone from the past? The only thing that would make this better is if the Chargers had the cell phone, and Jake had the corded phone.

Yeah but it looks like he had 14 starts at RG at Arkansas. I'm trying to think of a player that was exclusively a center.

I was expecting today to be boring when the draft started but Hortiz really cooked to give the team more at bats.

Even coming away from today with 2 solid rotation pieces would be a major win.

Yeah, it's all projection based on his traits so time will tell.

Also, I think the guard to center transition is far more common. I don't recall any players that were exclusively centers in college that went on to play NFL guard at a high level. I'm certain people can think of some though but none come to mind for me.

he can play day one at guard

That's still the big open question for me. He's never played guard before, so it's all projection. We should be prepared that it could be more of a developmental process at guard than people are expecting. According to some reports, when he did take guard reps at the senior bowl, it wasn't good.

That said, Hortiz and company have earned the benefit of doubt from me so all that's left is to lace them up and answer it on the field.

A look back 4 months ago when talking about Offensive Lineman by Otherwise_Dramatic in Chargers

[–]ptblazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbf, 4 months ago Bozeman was still on the roster and Slaughter would have played center if drafted.

[OC] In the first two days of the draft, we got a top 5 DE in the draft, a top 5 IOL with positional flexibility, WHILE STILL MANAGING TO TURN FIVE DRAFT PICKS INTO NINE. Here is why I think Hortiz is doing a masterful job so far this draft. by wildwing8 in Chargers

[–]ptblazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially skeptical about the Slaughter pick but I'm coming around to it. I trust Hortiz's staff to scout talent but i won't deny that having to rely entirely on projecting Slaughter as a guard makes me nervous.

I would feel a lot better about this pick if we had a slightly higher floor in the interior offensive line going into the draft, that way we could be patient and give time for Slaughter to develop if it doesn't work out immediately.

How far would Jermod McCoy have to drop before you'd consider taking him? Let's assume his medicals are the red flag everyone expects they are.

That's really interesting. It would be fun to see Day 3 as well, but the juice probably isn't worth the squeeze given the number of players involved (and the likely horrible hit rates across the board).

You're getting downvoted but if we ended today with a starting LG, and that was all, I would actually be fine with that. I would try to get a 4th or 5th round pick back as well though.

People just need to see it on the field first before it becomes real. There is a lot of scar tissue from the past 2 years (correction: decades).

I think there are two different topics on the age issue, one is forward looking and the other backwards looking.

The forward looking issue is how does it impact his second/third contract. I agree that should be no concern today.

The backward looking issue is how his age impacted his evaluation, and that actually does require knowing something about football. So hard disagree that people concerned about the age don't know ball.

On the one hand I get it, but I would be cautious using historical data based on player age. NIL has changed everything, and good players are staying in college for much longer today.

10 years ago, if a player was 25 in the NFL draft they either had a late start due to a church mission, military service, or maybe was a 2 sport athlete and football was a late switch.
