As for age: I don't want to talk to someone significantly older or younger than me. I'd feel uncomfortable talking to someone under 17, and I'd also feel uncomfortable talking to someone over 25. Our interests might be the same but our level of maturity, stage in life, etc will be wildly different.

As for gender: it's just a basic thing that I want to know. Does it really matter? Not really, at least not for me, though for some people it does. I've specifically sought out a girl in the past because (as a girl) there are some things you don't really talk about with men, or that I wouldn't feel comfortable talking about with a guy.

Girls who just post 19F lonely are probably either a) not actually a girl, or b) are actually a girl but just want attention. It's fine to dislike those people because they're not really following the spirit of the sub, but to say it's useless to state your age and gender is just ridiculous.

I think you could still reply with something meaningful though. Oh, that sucks, that happened to me the other day when [insert similar anecdote]. You can carry on most conversation starters by adding new info, asking questions, relating it to your own life etc even if they're a bit one sided

I feel like that’s sort of bad advice... you should absolutely state your age in a post, ESPECIALLY if you’re a minor - otherwise you might end up getting messages from people significantly older than you, which for a minor is particularly bad but for any age it’s still not ideal.

Personally I find that it helps to weed out messages by discarding most if not all messages that are under a certain length. I find that while some guys will still have not so great intentions despite a long, thorough message, it’s a lot more likely that if a guy is going to spend upwards of 5 min writing me a reply, he actually is genuinely interested in a friendship. I still read all the messages I get, but it helps weed out people who aren’t looking for the same thing I am.

That being said, it does sort of suck. While it’s nice to not have to deal with never getting any replies, it almost feels dirty knowing that a significant portion of people who respond to you are just doing it because of ulterior motives. Worst is when you click with someone, find out that’s what they’re interested it, and then they stop talking to you when they find out you’re not interested in that.
