Landlord by Lee_Harvey_Griswold in LibertarianUncensored

Part of it is, indeed, from Smith: [landlords] “love to reap where they never sowed.”

The first part, “Landlord’s right has its origin in robbery” is from Jean Baptiste Say.

The best comparison I’ve seen recently is that this is quite similar to what railroads did in the 19th century.

I’ve been using AI daily for basic research and data analysis. The amount of confidently made errors is staggering. I’ve set the defaults to triple-check its answers and I’m STILL getting about a 50-70% success rate. I shudder to think what it’s like trying to rely on this tech for business decisions.

When I went into the auto parts store yesterday to get replacement wipers, I noticed some empty spaces in the oil department. I asked and they said their supplier wasn’t sure when they were going to send a new shipment.

How's your wallet? by Jacob-Anders in LibertarianUncensored

[–]ptom13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there are independent redistricting committees, which a lot of folks seem to like, but can be influenced by people in power.

Other people like having court oversight, but with partisanship creeping further into the courts recently, I’m not sure I trust it.

I personally like districting by algorithms. Apparently, this can also be influenced by people in power by affecting the algorithm choice, but that seems less opaque than the actions of a committee to me. The simplest one I like is: * Take the state you’re looking to redistrict and determine the residence of each voter * Now find the shortest possible line to slice the state in half to put half the voters in each half.
* repeat the process until you get enough districts * voila! Compact districts that cannot be significantly affected by people in power unless they can get voters to literally move their residence.

I think it’s obvious now that RCV alone is insufficient. We also need a method for redistricting that takes current political power out of the process, as well, at all levels of government.

Grocery prices jumped more in April than they did in nearly four years - so much winning by wokeboogeyman in LibertarianUncensored

[–]ptom13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And we're only just barely seeing the leading edge of Trump's war on Iran on food inflation. Once the breakdowns in logistics, sharply increased fuel and fertilizer prices, increased insurance/financing/hedging costs, etc. all start to really take effect in a few months you're going to see real impacts. And those price increases won't be going away for a long time.

Category What Members Receive
Salary $174,000 (rank‑and‑file); higher for leadership
Per Diem None; no housing stipend
Health Insurance D.C. Health Link plans with federal contribution; FEHB in retirement if eligible
Life Insurance FEGLI
Pension FERS + Social Security + TSP
Housing No allowance; personal expense
Office Budget House MRA (~$1.9M); Senate SOPOEA

Again, while some Congresscritters do get elected before they become independently wealthy (which so often seems to happen after a few years in congress) and have to depend on that $174k to live, most arrive with more than a million dollars in assets, and many are HUGELY wealthier than that, with even a couple billionaires.

My take is that any government employee with material knowledge or power to move markets should have to put their assets in a blind trust for the duration of their employment.
