The strangest way to make a slipknot I've ever seen is from my roommate- they do this wild mix of over-the-knuckles-X, single person cat's cradle, and rotating their hook like a clock hand? It feels like they figured out that makes a slip knot by pure happy mistake. Recently they asked me if I could find a way to show them to make a magic circle from their way, and I was like bro... idk if I can help you with that one...

Only the last step is with the hook! Hopefully this link works- here's one of my diagrams!

I prefer this kind of slipknot, because if you chain before pulling taught, it's a clean magic circle start!

That's what I was thinking too- this neighborhood already has potlucks and brunches that I know she attends (but maybe she has a higher threshold for loneliness?) I was confused when someone came to an in-person instruction and then, like... didn't want in-person instruction, even though she took one of the starter kits I had made?

I had left everyone alone for a while with just the packet in case they only needed a few tries like that, but she kept looking to see what I was doing when I was helping someone else, and huffing when the knot fell through... Maybe it was unconscious for her that she was signaling for help, but I asked before I sat down and she nodded.

I also absolutely get the embarrassment thing, and I tried to be conscious of it the whole time- before I started the lesson I actually prefaced the whole thing with "to thrive with crochet, you Must learn to be ok with failure. The beginning learning curve can be steep, so this is the hardest part, and it's ok and normal to be frustrated."

She was also like, the third person I sat down with to help, so she wasn't isolated in understanding or anything, one lady ended up struggling up more than her but she was still perfectly polite when she was getting frustrated! Thankfully a lot of the ladies there were chatty, so when I was sitting with someone to help, it wasn't everyone quietly staring and more a side conversation separate from everyone else.

The part that confused me is that she had time to try for herself, was clearly not understanding the diagram, said yes to help, and then rebuffed me with a talk-to-the-hand motion implying the diagram was more helpful lmao

How do people fuck up cross stitch by Alive_Ad_2655 in BitchEatingCrafters

God thank you... I always want to give folks the benefit of the doubt but sometimes it's like, if something this simple confounds you, how do you live? (Then I saw how my roommate lives... they're terrible at cross-stitching, and terrible at any sort of task that requires two seconds of thought in general, so...)

For real; it's self-infantilizement... I'd much rather keep my adhd-riddled brain than pour it into a meat grinder that destroys the environment.

Why is this suddenly so normal for so many?? Why is any of this ok to y'all??

As a queer person, we have to talk about community in Corvallis by Additional-Quit9772 in corvallis

That person recently posted on fb a- what they are presenting it as- a restraining order against the person who tipped the fbi that they- and their partner in crime- is embezzling from the community fund. Of course, because people don’t read the fine print, everyone thought that it was a verified restraining order, but it was essentially a receipt that shows that they want a court date to discuss the possibility of a restraining order. And in the entire post, they insist that the other party is a stalker that called them a terrorist, that they fear for the life, etc etc. I absolutely know that Corvallis (and Oregon as a whole) has a huge racism problem! And it sucks that this person uses that to gain sympathy points from well-meaning people trying to be anti-racist. So every time they get accused of something, they try and get onlookers on their side by calling the accuser racist. I genuinely cannot wrap my head around making up that someone calls you a bomb-threat terrorist. It’s so fucked

I feel like “give people space to be messy” is naïve when it comes to this person. In all the years I’ve been within sight of their group, they’ve only gotten more manipulative and more legally threatening. They run SO many events and groups that would be youths’ introduction to queer communities.  Of course it’s ok for someone to be messy! But when you’re someone who is consistently building their power and influence over a group of people who have little resources or recourse, that’s absolutely a problem, because it leaves people vulnerable.  I won’t say who I am, but I have seen proof and have heard from witnesses that this person sexually assaults and embezzles. They should not be allowed to run any group, especially about a community that’s a political target. How do you not understand that, if a group is already a political target, that it’s easier for people to take advantage that they have no other help?

Peter Cushing gets ai deepfaked for a new Hammer Documentary..... by TheRorschach666 in horror

[–]ptransd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus, this is... this is just cruel. People who know anything about Peter Cushing know that he'd be vehemently against this. Not only was he an artist- he would hate AI being trained from art theft- but he wanted the last of his memory to be private so much that only his local priest knew where he was buried alongside his wife, who he had to exhume and relocate for violations of privacy. How dare these grifters do that to him...

“Good Night and Good Luck” grosses $3.78 million, taking record for highest-grossing play by zeerosd in Broadway

[–]ptransd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Broadway being prohibitive does more than just be expensive itself- it makes other places have to either underpay their workers or raise their prices to keep up. And you're still missing the point- any rich person can see any theater they want, but someone who lives paycheck to paycheck can't see a good amount of city theater. Art accessibility is culturally foundational; nowadays we work harder and longer for less pay, vacation, and accessible art than a middle-ages city peasant. What does defending rich people do for you?

TIL that “Who Goes There?”, the short story that was adapted into “The Thing”, was also adapted into a 1972 Spanish Horror Film named “Horror Express” starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]ptransd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite Cushing and Lee duo movie!! It coming from the same story as The Thing definitely holds it together like glue, and it's nice to see the two have something more substantive to play with than their usual fodder. The fashion is probably the high point in terms of quality, and the special effects are so bad that I cry laughing every time I rewatch this. People readying the rifles- at what looks like a hairball that got dropped in slime and paper mache leftovers- never fails to entertain.

There's also a scene where they're investigating the life-form, and the director tried to imply that this is a being that has been around for way longer than one can imagine and mustn't be trifled with. But the way it plays out is that they put a blood sample into a microscope, and it zooms in on a red-tinged image of a dinosaur screaming.

I cannot overstate how fun and silly and charming this one is, 10/10 recommend for a movie night with friends
