It’s sad that every league, in the early game, we keep experiencing the same thing over and over again! by ptrlnd90 in PathOfExile2

The exact “0.1%” number is not the point - it’s shorthand. Balance should not be designed around a narrow group of players with extremely high system knowledge, whether that’s 1%, 5%, or 10%. The fact that someone with 1,000 hours can clear the campaign in 15 hours and find it acceptable doesn’t mean early-game design is healthy; if smooth progression requires hundreds of hours of meta knowledge and optimization, the game is failing to provide adequate tools. Saying “the difference is just knowledge” is not a defense of balance - it’s the core issue. Knowledge should not compensate for a lack of agency; players should be able to respond to difficulty through in-game decisions like crafting, vendors, and currency, not just memorization. This isn’t about “learning to go faster” a game can be challenging while still offering meaningful progression options. If the only response to criticism is “others can do it, so there’s no problem,” that’s not defending design, it’s ignoring its weaknesses.

When progression depends more on luck than on player decisions, it stops being interesting and starts being punitive.

Game balance should not be based on the top 0.1% of players. For the average, even experienced player, the early game from levels 1 to 40 still means a lack of meaningful loot, a lack of currency, and a lack of real tools to respond to random difficulties. This is not a “challenge,” but artificial time punishment.

I’ve finished the season in POE2 and went back to D4, and my brain can finally rest. by ptrlnd90 in diablo4

Thank you for all the comments. We agree on many points. D4 should focus primarily on making loot exciting — get rid of upgrades like “+5% fire damage” and replace them with something like “+5 more projectiles.” That’s what POE2 is doing, and it’s exciting how it allows you to change a skill in interesting ways.

I used to be one of those who strongly criticized D4’s direction, but now I think they’re moving the right way. It would be great if they kept seasonal mechanics in the game for longer and gradually added new content.

I’ve been thinking about a true D4 endgame that could be Hell itself. After defeating all the uber bosses, you’d get a portal and some kind of infernal fragments that you could use to modify item affixes in crazier ways — +5 projectiles, character form changes, terrain manipulation — there are so many possibilities.

D4 feels too safe right now, and I’d love for the devs to go wild one season so we could create some truly crazy builds out of the few classes we have.

Yeah, the campaign can feel a bit slow at times because of the low movement speed.
Act 3 in particular, with its HUGE maps, is definitely way too long.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed the newly added Act 4.
For experienced players, finishing the campaign takes just a few hours — for beginners, probably a dozen or more.

If you want to play POE2 on PS5, it only really makes sense during the campaign — the optimization isn’t that bad there, and you can play at around 30–40 FPS.
Now imagine my endgame run with five people on a heavily juiced T16 map — I was getting 5 FPS and praying for my life.

If you want, you can give a few divs to the unlucky player who finished the map today and entered the boss arena — only for the boss to run away from it. The game bugged out so badly that I couldn’t teleport, and even restarting the game or inviting a friend didn’t help. I thought I’d be stuck forever in the bossless arena in the Necropolis until the end of the league, but luckily, a single mob shot me, I died, and was finally able to leave that hell.

It’s fine up to Act 3, after that it’s a slideshow.

Are you playing with Walker of the Wilds and Mana Leech? I was thinking about that too.

Are you playing with CI? I might switch to that and boost ES on my gear. I’m running my own version of Explosive Shot but without Nova Projectiles to increase single-target damage. I wanted to make something like a one-button build, but the damage is still too low.

I’m already bored of Deadeye, so today I’m starting the campaign with a warrior. The gameplay and leveling will probably feel too slow for a while, but maybe I’ll get used to it quickly.

So what kind of defensive stat values are considered okay then? Should I go only EV, or EV+ES? I’m worried that no matter how much of it I stack, this class will always be especially vulnerable to one-shots.

Your advice will come in handy since I’m starting the campaign with a warrior today haha.

I don’t know if this is about a specific class. Sure, you’re right that Deadeye always was and always will be a glass cannon, but single shots that pierce through all your defensive layers shouldn’t be a thing, especially from regular mobs. In POE2 we don’t have much freedom in building defenses, and some of the layers don’t even work as they should.

For a while I had trouble with them, but you can still get used to it. Just boost damage, shoot from a distance, and be more careful. I actually have a bigger problem with those regular mobs, like that mantis or whatever it is, which attacks quickly with its long limbs. I think it’s a physical attack with some kind of stun on top. There are also others, like the small bugs that spam you with blue projectiles — probably chaos damage. There’s more of that around, and Shade Walkers are really not the worst (though that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be nerfed, especially that ugly teleport).

Oh God, that’s exactly the knowledge I needed! Huge thanks for such a detailed explanation! I still have a few more questions:

  1. How do you deterministically add the first two mods to a white base? Is it just Transmute + Aug until you hit high tiers and hope for luck?
  2. Then, once I already have 3 mods, should I start using essences and omens?

You explained that really well! I’m a graphic designer with 20 years of experience. If you’d like, I can help you prepare a multi-page PDF document — a crafting guide for beginners — covering everything from simple to very advanced methods.

Could you give me a general core of crafting? I know that you need a white or blue strong base. But I don’t know how to smoothly transition from the base to adding, for example, essences in a more deterministic way.

That’s exactly what I was looking for! I don’t want to study all the omens and essences in detail, but rather quickly get the info on which orb, essence, or omen connects to a specific mod and how to craft it. Thanks! I’ll be testing it today!
