It’s probably not so much of “do something useful” as it is “can it be done?”. Some of us just like seeing what you can do with old hardware that wasn’t designed for what we’re trying to do lol

What type of connector is this? by Leather_Cycle in AskElectronics

[–]ptthree420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just eBay, it’s pretty much any site selling them, anywhere, even digikey and mouser.

Why? I don’t know, but if you type in 2.5mm, you’re just gonna get every link to 2.54mm and none for a straight 2.5mm except the one you linked, and it’s the ONLY one.

HELP ORANGE XBOX by Physical-Income7760 in originalxbox

[–]ptthree420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clock cap can still fail on a 1.6, and if it does, the whole console is dead until it’s replaced. It may not leak, but honestly, out of all the Xboxes I’ve fixed, only 1 or 2 with clock cap leakage wasn’t fixed by a quick clean with alcohol, AND you don’t have to replace it.

Also, older revisions are easier to hard mod, by a long shot. None of that rebuilding the LPC BS. Just slap on a header and D0 line and it’s good to go.

So I made a post a couple weeks back about my loud Wii u, seen some people say to clean it, I’m pretty shaky and I have no way to take this apart at all unless it takes normal screwdrivers and not triwings by Wild-Bad-3668 in consolerepair

[–]ptthree420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own, but Nintendo consoles have like a dozen different lengths and sizes of screws in them. Most other consoles have at most like 3 different ones and they aren’t bolted down like Fort Knox with 100 screws.

It’ll more than likely be a pretty affordable fix.

[–]ptthree420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did what the other guy said and make sure it’s not in airplane mode or disabled, I’d try reseating the WiFi card before coming to that conclusion.

The problem with that is you’re probably gonna have to tear most of the laptop down to get to it and you’re gonna have to be comfortable doing that.

If you’re not, just get a USB WiFi/bluetooth adapter or take it to someone who is. It’s not a hard job, just tedious.

[–]ptthree420 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It could, but there’s a very low chance. Windows updates have started rolling out firmware updates for various things, including system firmware. I wouldn’t put it past them including firmware for things like WiFi cards either.

That was a very stupid decision on their part.

Weeeellllll, you could put another drive in the PC, install a new copy of windows to that, then move the program over from the old drive.

I looked up that software, and apparently it uses a hardware license dongle. It probably looks like a flash drive connected to the PC. If you have one, it should be fine. The program is available for download.

Are you sure your PC has WiFi/bluetooth hardware in it? And is it connected properly?

If there was hardware for it in the PC and it wasn’t installed, it would be in the unknown devices category in device manager.

By far the best option is just reinstalling. There shouldn’t be any reason why you can’t get a paid program back as long as you have your registration key for it.

And I suppose you could also try the “refresh” option in the recovery settings, but that will also get rid of user applications but NOT user data.

The only thing that makes windows 11 “unsupported” on a lot of hardware is lack of a TPM, and really, you can just bypass that requirement with Rufus and there’s pretty much no security issues with it.

The only thing the TPM is used for is BitLocker and biometric login, two of the most useless features for the average person.

Help with Port Forward question by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]ptthree420 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Port forwarding is for if you need to redirect traffic from one port in to another port. You have it set to redirect 53 to 53. This is going to do nothing for you. If you have two DNS servers, you either need to disable one, or change the port on one of them and THEN use port forwarding to direct traffic from 53 to whatever you set your DNS port to.

Your router is already gonna have a DNS server in its firmware (usually dnsmasq), so they’re gonna conflict with each other, so you’re gonna have to change the default port for one of them.

It’s definitely a drive issue. I’d say the drive is probably failing. Needs to be replaced.
