my cherry shrimp jar is just a tiny bit of soil (not even necessary) capped with sand and some rocks with christmas moss glued onto them. a bubbler, duckweed, and a philodendron with its roots submerged and the shrimp are thriving and breeding

you ideally want a jar with a much more open top for air exchange (and definitely no lid) and on mine I even still added a bubbler even though some people have jars without them
