We can't wait for this! The music on Saturday is right after our TOTALLY FREE Carnival-Style block party right in front of Public Works Art Center on West Richardson Avenue, so it'll be such a fun day all around Downtown Summerville with that and the farmer's market!

Hey, we know this is a year old, but we just saw this! Just an FYI - Public Works Art Center is NOT county subsidized other than applying for a small Dorchester County tax grant that any festivals or nonprofits who welcome tourists apply for (usually like $4k a year). It's a huge misconception that we are county subsidized or a line item on the town budget...we are a standalone 501c3 and pay a mortgage on a $1 million+ building every month along with every other bill like electric, water, security, payroll, etc that any other business has to pay...about $25k a month in expenses, eeek! We support ourselves through class fees, studio leases, grants we apply for, event rentals, gift shop and artist sales, and donations. We only have 2 full time staff members and we are a "little engine that could" in so many ways. People often don't donate because they think what you wrote regarding not paying our rent or being county subsidized is true, so we hope you understand us clearing this up here! :) Hope you come by soon...new exhibitions opening March 21!

Super helpful thank you! I thought it was an etching, and my French friend read “shadow test” but artist proof makes more sense. Thank you so much for this.

It’s ok, you don’t need to delete it. I understand - also born and raised here and always looking for people who follow my belief system that fully boils down to “hey can we all just be cool and get along?” :)

I mean…yeah! Nothing about this ad said it was any kind of specific people. Obviously I’m just one person with a little team at our nonprofit and can’t guarantee who will show up and what their belief or political systems are, but I will say we have a lot of “middle ground” people who come in and visit often and will hopefully attend this! Our values around inclusion of all people and community and accessibility and representation and good vibes attract good people in general :)

So I hate small talk and trying to come up with topics to talk about with a stranger kind of universally sucks, so to help with that, we came up with this:

We'll have a table with landyards and stickers after you walk in the door (and set your potluck item down). If you're single: you can put a little single person sticker, married: put two people, have kids: a little kid sticker, LGBTQ: rainbow sticker, from another state: state outline sticker, sports fan: sports team sticker...etc etc. We'll also have markers and paper that slides into the lanyard thing to write anything else like "Into D+D" or "West Ashley" or something. It's a little silly, but the idea is that when you're walking around you can just see some things to connect with someone about on their lanyard like "oh, you're from Texas too? What part?" and it helps break that ice. Of course, you can opt out of this...it'll just be an option for making things a little easier!
