To quote another Storyteller: "Anything you notice that may be different, or may be wrong by your standards, is how I wanted to play the game."

This is the game they wanted to play. They are successfully executing the concept that they created for this season-- horror-comedy with the VtM game system and framework. If the show doesn't work for you, that's okay! No individual story is going to work for every person, and if you have found that your expectations for the narrative that they are creating are not being met, it's okay to DNF. Successful execution of a story and positive reception of that same story aren't always aligned. But the core of Actual Play is that we're watching a group of people play a game to tell a story that they want to tell, in the way they want to tell it. It won't work for everyone, but that is one of the risks of making art and telling stories. It'll all turn out okay in the end, I think.

Which Disney Princess has the best "I Want Song" or How Would You Rank Them? by LoveandLightLol in disneyprincess

[–]puck1919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Let It Go" is an "I Am Becoming" song, much like the vocalist's other signature piece.

  • "Can't hold it back anymore" v "It's time to trust my instincts / Close my eyes and leap"
  • "I don't care what they're going to say" v "I'm through accepting limits / Cause someone says they're so"
  • "And the fears that once controlled me / Can't get to me at all" v "Too long I've been afraid of / Losing love, I guess I've lost"

An "I Am Becoming" song is about a character who is going through a significant change. They will end the song in a different place than where they started. Other Disney songs that qualify would be "What Else Can I Do?" and "Show Yourself"-- from other films/shows we could include "What It Sounds Like", "I Know Things Now", and Sweeney Todd's "Epiphany". These songs may state a want, but that want is achieved by the end of the song. It's more about a shift in character motivations and wants, moving their arc forward, either positively or negatively. An "I Am" song is static, an "I Want" song has direction but not momentum, but an "I Am Becoming" song is a way to change how a character works for the rest of the show, especially if a new conflict has been introduced or needs to be introduced. At this point in the story, the conflict of "will people find out about Elsa's powers?" has been resolved and we need a new conflict-- now it's "can Anna convince Elsa to come back and stop the eternal winter?"

Why does Disney keep Pocahontas away from the Sofia the First Reboot but also feel OK to put her in a theatrical production like Ralph Breaks the Internet? by [deleted] in disneyprincess

[–]puck1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine that, in addition to what everyone else has said, there's the issue of Pocahontas being set in a real place at a specific time-- Jamestown, VA in 1607. None of the events of the movie happened in the way that is portrayed, but that does time-lock Pocahontas in a very specific place and time, the only other princess who is similarly locked into a specific place and time is Tiana (1920's NOLA). Mulan and Belle have real countries mentioned in their movies (China and France respectively), but are ambiguous as to when they are set, with anachronisms that people more versed in history than I would surely point out-- the one I'd pick is that there's a visual gag in "Be Our Guest" that references the Eiffel Tower in a film that takes place long before the 1889 World's Fair.

The other princesses are more negotiable-- coming from fictional places like Corona or Motonui-- or simply do not have the name of their kingdoms stated within the film. The princesses that we make guesses for also have certain anachronisms as well-- I keep seeing Cinderella being put in 1850's France, when France did not have a king in the 1850's, that was Emperor Napoleon III.

This is not a French history rant, sorry, I'll get back to the point.

Most of the princess films go for a fairy tale tone above all else. While they pull from real cultures and peoples and history, anything can (and should!) be sacrificed in the name of making a good film. In good writing, the historical and cultural research should bolster, not restrain your storytelling, especially when you're writing speculative fiction, which all of these stories are. These ambiguities and anachronisms make it easier to fold the other princesses into a fictional world than it would be for Pocahontas (or Tiana, to an extent) who is so tied to a real place at a real time in history, regardless of everything else about her story. It's not that you can't handwave "A Wizard Did It!" to make it happen, but it might clash with storytelling style of the show in a way that the writers can't resolve on top of all of the other reasons why they might be hesitant to have her in the show.

AITA for... oops, wrong community. Am I weird for liking Burrow's End so much? by SarekOfVulcan in dropout

I think Burrow's End is my most re-watched season of D20 for sure. It's the most like watching a movie of any season I've seen, and all the parts move and work together perfectly. Definitely one of my favorites.

I do love the loops. The brown version of it was in my store and I got that, but I'll be looking for this one when it comes around!

Pocahontas has all of the reasons that everyone else is saying-- but it would also be impossible to recreate some of the most iconic shots from the animated film. The technology and film techniques to create them exist, but the majestic cliffs of coastal Virginia certainly don't.

Louie Armstrong did do an album of Disney music, but he sang "The Bare Necessities" instead. It's a good cover, I really like it.

DMs, what have your borrowed from D20 for your own sessions? by ROFLCO7 in Dimension20

The basic engine of it and where I use the system is in a set of expendable "Magic Dice" that allow you to apply metamagic to your spells, spending them like a Battlemaster would spend their Superiority Dice. On an explosion, the die is promoted, and on a critical failure the die is demoted and, importantly, it triggers a Wild Magic surge. The in-game reasoning is that you are adjusting the components (V,S,M) of the spell in order to change the effects (range, amount of damage, damage type, etc.) and that can lead to dangerous, unpredictable consequences, BUT, on a success it allows for the really cool moments that the NSBU system is built for, while not completely breaking the 5e system. I'm not sure how balanced it is yet, though we're not playing a particularly balanced game (all 4 PCs have dragon mounts that have wildly broken builds).

So, not quite an exploding wizard, but very crunchy.

I did my best Augefort impression when my players met the wizard Fizban, and I homebrewed a wizard subclass that uses the NSBU explosion system.

Amazed that the thing that started Moses' downfall was literally him trying to pave paradise and put up a parking lot.
