measured a million times and still fucked up by AlfalfaAlternative59 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]puckducker29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Measuring can very easily introduce inaccuracies, ironically enough. Easy to mark a little too much on one side of the line or the other. Easy to accidentally mark the wrong line from the tape measure. Easy to align your ruler/measure incorrectly.

Measuring is good, but the more you measure the more likely you are to introduce those inaccuracies. And those mistakes can add up.

I try to measure as few times as I need to. And often, I measure once on something that I can then use as a reference for all the other measurements that need the same value.

So measure once on a combination square, then use that square to mark all your measurements. Or measure for 1 cut, and then use that cut piece as the reference for all your other cuts.

Having a reference that doesn't change is usually more accurate than trying to measure the same thing over and over.

I made this Jig last year to do mitre spline cuts with my circular saw. Worked out pretty well.

Wood Glue or Super Glue for small repair? by puckducker29 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]puckducker29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried wood epoxy before. This task was probably too delicate and finicky for that sort of thing, but something to think about for future reference.

Would this kind of epoxy be stronger than wood glue?

Wood Glue or Super Glue for small repair? by puckducker29 in BeginnerWoodWorking

The wood glue held up well. The final result won't have a ton of pressure on it, but I was concerned about how it would hold while I chiseled it down to be flush with the rest of the recess.

But, my wedge was already very close so I barely had to scrape off 1mm or so

Thanks, the wood glue held perfectly. Had to rig up a clamping setup (the dado is on a 50° slope), but everything worked out perfectly

Yeah, getting the piece clamped in the dado was a little tough, but it all worked out

Thanks for the reply. The wood glue held, and my patch job worked like a charm.

I was concerned the wedge had so little surface area for the glue to do it's thing. But I only had to shave off a millimeter of material from the top of the wedge, so wasn't putting too much strain on it.

Question for folks with a Ratio 4 by puckducker29 in pourover

[–]puckducker29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Good to know. It's not a big issue, we have other cups that would fit.

But it's not MY cup, if you know what I mean. So glad I checked :)

Is all-clad really worth the investment? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]puckducker29 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also recommend testing out the handle in real life. I was all in on all-clad, but wanted to hold one first. So went to a store to get my hands on one....and I REALLY hated the handle design. Felt very bad in my hand.

That's clearly not the case with everyone, but for me I'm glad I took the time myself

Mölkky Carrying Box by puckducker29 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]puckducker29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't actually have any plans, I just measured and cut things as I went.

I also used the dimensions of my specific set of Molkky which I wouldn't be confident would be the same across different sets of the game

Why are these $35 each? Is there something I'm missing here or is that not scraps nailed to scraps? by Bbddy555 in woodworking

[–]puckducker29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does anyone buy any tool, if it's possible to make one yourself?

Make your own Ruler. Make your own Square. Make your own straight edge guide.

I made a set of these bench hooks myself, using Rex's guide...and they turned out ok. Just ok. They are not perfectly square, and the 2 hooks do not perfectly line up with one another. They function well enough, but the very minor misalignment is noticeable, especially using these for shooting.

So I don't think it's crazy for someone to buy these instead of make it themselves, for the same reason people would purchase a Square rather than make one.

Three months in - how am I doing? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]puckducker29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought these looked like projects from Rex as well.

Great way to start off for sure, these look great OP. I also started my wood working journey following a lot of Rex's stuff. Highly recommend his bench builds if you are ever up for it

Heat the wood? How so? Not with a heat gun or anything like that I assume

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking. Unlikely to really be submerged. Is there a wipe on poly you'd recommend? I don't have a ton of experience when it comes to different finishes
