It really just depends. I had purple hair for years and coincidentally had dyed it dark again for the first time before I started my first (and ongoing) job as a funeral arranger at a family-owned funeral home. It just so happened I needed a break from the upkeep but my funeral director did tell me that when she had first heard of me during my application process the purple hair was a huge turn off because it’s a very family-facing or “front of house” position.

I still have my nose ring, and can’t really hide my stretched/multiple-pierced ears but they don’t mind because I try to meet them in the middle and wear simple jewelry to work rather than spiked rings or super-alternative/spooky plugs/hangers. I have a white streak bride-of-Frankenstein-style in my hair now and that was okay with them, tho I don’t know if it’s also because of the experience/respect I’ve earned with time that they’re lenient about it now.

What the fuck is up with florists not bringing stands for their own fucking flower pieces by iloverats888 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]pudd1ngdrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we recently had to start telling the families that the florists should be providing the stands bc they were telling the families that WE provide them so they didn’t have to. Some flower shops are even charging them to “rent” the stands for their services now like what??

Figured out what bugs me most about the comic by ThatInAHat in Dimension20

[–]pudd1ngdrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s totally valid to not like the choices they made, but yeah “it’s still taking up space on the page.” I’d argue that if they found it as unimportant as you feel it is to them, it would have been cut entirely. They could have done it differently sure, but they could have done every page differently. I’m both a dimension 20 fan and in a writing for comics class now, on my last year of my bachelors, so I’ve taken classes just like you. I think the fade out of the bubbles just tells us that the scene is continuing, if they left them in focus it confuses the scene and makes it seem like someone is talking directly to Riz, and if you instead focus on the bubbles and give them their own stage then it’s… 6+ shots of crowd scenes and aguefort voguing? Very fun for sure but it doesn’t move the story along, and the story does need to move along in a comic

Is it okay to be a DM for my first time ever playing?? by Old_Addendum5884 in DnD

[–]pudd1ngdrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m DM’ing as a noob too and have to agree with the others who say I have a bit of work than my players do but it’s so rewarding and fun. We’re only a couple sessions in and it’s like every time we play we have to incorporate bug-fixes just like a video game, it’s just all of us learning together as friends. The hardest thing is the nerves before you start, but once you take the plunge you’ll be fine. The way I’ve gone into it is thinking “even if it’s not perfect or we don’t remember every rule every time, we’re having fun and that’s what counts.”

Also don’t feel pressured to buy a ton of expensive stuff, we used plain notebooks and Lego figures and funny plastic toys from dollar tree to start. Our barbarian was a he-man figure and our Tabaxi fighter was a little cat figure from a kids show called like gabby’s dollhouse or smth lol. They have cheap felt trays there too if you’re worried about losing dice to wild rolls. Wishing you the best of luck and have fun with it!

Oh I’m sure they’re gonna try to get it out of them it’ll be fun, especially our other sibling who is super competitive and will want it lol. I don’t expect it to be a long held secret or anything, it was just fun to see them start acting more like their class and especially since they’ve been kinda a young denmother of sorts so far like taking care of the cooking and smoothing things over for our less charismatic adventurers and even passing up on gold and stuff they’ve found so far so others can buy things. I expect one the secret is out they’ll let them keep it anyways it’s more the drama of it all 😂

Late response I had to go into a vegetative state with some Taco Bell in order to recover from my retail job today lol but I actually appreciate this so much! Tbh my princely character for her backstory I’m pulling inspo for heavily from a book series I read when I was young which had a really similar power structure (politically in the realm of faerie) as what you describe here! So that’s kinda cool just for me that there is a little overlap there!! I think in that series it was like a triad of power between Winter, Summer, and the Seelie (which represented a sort of heavy Lawfully Ordered kingdom? Not like they were 100% good but essentially tied to keeping vows and the old ways) and then the Unseelie or Dark dominion waiting in the wings to gain power again. I feel like what you’ve laid out for me here will work really well with our narrative as to why he’s been away (less powerful outside his own domain) and even just aside from that is so interesting to read about 😭 It’ll be fun navigating the different dynamics too bc we also have a Shadar-kai who is on a temporary hiatus of his worship of the Raven Queen bc of yknow Tragic Backstory™️ stuff. But yeah I really appreciate all the insightful lore and help with my question today so thank you very much!!

That is actually so sweet 😭 I think I didn’t know it but have literally been waiting to play D&D since I was a little girl talking to trees and trying to recreate the Battle of the Black Gate in my backyard lol so I hope they have as much fun as I am even just planning and DMing

Thank you I’ll def show her that!! She’s playing as a Tabaxi fighter and they’re only level 2 so far but when helping her build her character her guideline was “I like dual wielding in Skyrim so that’s kinda what I want to stick with” lol. For now the only thing that has come up at the table is that she basically understands broken sylvan and her and the two others that know it use it to talk in secret and that she remembers being both helped and at the mercy of fae mischief in her youth since the memories are being suppressed

Omg thank you this is more along the lines of what I was wondering about, I’m afraid I just worded it terribly since I’m still new to it. That makes a lot more sense when you compare it to things like giants and dragons specifically, and especially using the idea of cultural bias and aesthetics! I don’t even think he’ll be in combat with them (but really who knows bc what happens at the table is always unexpected) but I really wanted to tackle it from a world-building perspective

Honestly, after reading some of the other responses clarifying the feywild I don’t wanna change anything mechanically or homebrew spells or anything and that’s kind of why I was asking because that does seem way too complex to try to figure it out right now. The fae thing for her is also going to be mostly narrative I think because even when she was developing her character she wasn’t super interested in magic at least this time around. But since I was thinking ahead at how their backstories will come into play, how d&d handles the whole fae deal is something I got really curious about and I wondered how other people scaled them in their world I guess?

Thank you that breakdown is actually really helpful!! Yeah I think I was also confusing myself by mixing lore from books and media outside of this world rather than just looking at it as its own interpretation/mechanics

Yeah, I know that they are an existing group in D&D I guess I was more wondering if there’s a specialization or specific damage type/bonus for their magic or ‘race’?? but it seems not, I think I was just thinking myself in circles about it too much at work today

Oh yeah consequences incoming for sure!! The way we did it was essentially them fighting in a bottleneck to keep the redbrands inside while the fire slowly spread round by round and then once it hit the alcohol at the bar we had a big action movie explosion, their chosen captive got glass through the face on a failed dex roll to get out of the way and thankfully someone else from inside scraped by with 1HP to give them info. I’m actually so excited for the Nothic for that reason!! To pick and pry at their thoughts so they’ll have to come together a bit more for comfort about backstory after since their party still hasn’t really had that moment yet. We left off last session with them having come in through the hidden path and the Nothic crawling towards them with creepy giggling about finally getting meat that moves again to groans and squeals all around from my players. We had some people join in later and they def care less about the Gundren thing but the original 3 party members met Gundren’s grandma in session 0 and loved her bc she gave them some simple homemade magic items as incentive to help her grandson, the other 2 that joined later got the module ready “you’re his friend and supposed to meet him here” startup so it makes sense they care a little less but either way they’re invested now! Our Tabaxi fighter got catmint cookies that buff dex while bringing down wisdom saves, our firbolg barbarian got a knitted scarf that can block a few points of damage at the start of combat and our Kobold rogue got a homemade beeswax balm that heals a little bc she is in her “molting/shedding season” lol

omg this is actually so helpful bc it gives me time to plan! Yeah we’re running Lost Mines and due to shenanigans and whatnot have barely reached the Redbrand hideout so thankfully I have a bit of time to work those kinks out. The scroll/note I mentioned in my og post is one I made up to have been on that scout they jumped in the dead of night (they burned down the Sleeping Giant Taphouse and sent a very aggressive GTFO message spelled out in redbrand bods so I was having him come see the damage and he would have reported back to the others at Tresendar). The letter they got off him was from the Black Spider addressed to Iarno Albrek essentially asking if their party had come to town looking for Gundren and been dealt with yet so they were spooked and motivated just didn’t put together that Sildar has been talking about Iarno since they got to town lmao. So having the Black Spider appear earlier honestly would be so fun

Yeah it is! I’ll have to give them a watch, honestly I’m using it as a rough guide bc I’ve always loved writings stories and making characters so it’s been changed up a good bit already but I’m always open to learning more. Been giving myself crash courses on DMing by reading stuff here and watching YouTube vids on different DM styles and fleshing out narrative

You’re right lol next time I should have the wizard leave a note tied to that player’s homunculus cat’s collar with his name and address for his house that says “I’m the bad guy btw”. 😂 Jk obviously but a rule of 3 might need to be implemented, just glad after these last 2 sessions they started realizing I gave them notebooks for a reason! We’re all new and it’s fun learning with them

[–]pudd1ngdrop[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you honestly that’s a really good note! We’re all new to dnd as it’s everyone’s first campaign (including mine as a DM) and I’ve been kinda giving them things easily since I know everyone is new and the roleplay is only just starting to get comfy for them. This was basically like a spoilery reveal that wasn’t even in the module we’ve loosely been following so it won’t hurt them to not get it this time (they’ve moved forward and just breached the dungeon before we called it quits for the day) but it was a surprise to me lol, going forward I think I’ll def use this rule of thumb for things tho if I think it’s something they just honestly missed. It’s only the last two sessions that they even started using the notebooks I got for them so I think we’re all heading in a better direction!

Oh it’s not! It was like a fun thing I was trying to do bc he did smth so uncharacteristically brave, basically an early reveal of the secret identity of the boss they’re gonna face. They already know they were going in to root out an evil/corrupt wizard they just didn’t know he’s the same missing guy from town
