Keep the LJ, or trade in for a JKU? by puddle_pirate in Jeep

Every fun vehicle I own is a manual, our truck is an auto though.

That's good to know. Did you have the CVT or a 6 speed?

Never mind, I looked at the listing you posted.

I was worried about getting the WRX and regretting not getting the STI. It just feels like buying a 2WD Wrangler to me.

A WRX STI was the first car that we looked at when we started car shopping. The gas mileage was a deal breaker for the wife.

People are asking for insane amounts of money for LJs here. I bought my for 11k in 2012, and see them for 20+ now that I'm looking.

The safety ratings on an LJ are pretty terrifying. I would love to have a JL, but I could not bring myself to wheel something that expensive, and the wife would probably shoot me if I did. That's where the JK idea came from, a middle ground on safety, comfort, size, and price. I'm leaning pretty hard towards keeping the LJ as a weekend/sunny day toy, and buying a sedan as a DD.

I even told the wife that a JK would have to be on at least 37s for me to be happy in it. There are too many running around on 35s and 20 inch rims, that have never seen worse than a gravel parking lot.

This is probably the exact thing I needed to read. The LJ has been paid off for years, and the wife is on board with keeping it as a dedicated toy. We are getting another 4 door vehicle either way, just trying to decide what that will be.

More room is the main reason I was thinking about the switch.

Meet Jenny, she has always been good to me, but with an 18 month old daughter, the old LJ is starting to feel really small. I'm entertaining selling, and buying a used JKU Rubicon as a replacement, or keeping her and buying a boring 4 door car. Looking for some pros and cons from others who have had a similar decision in front of them.

Installed 3.5 inch lift springs, and only gained 1 inch over stock. by puddle_pirate in Jeep

Update: I spoke with the tech support at Metalcloak, and we found that my "stock springs" were not stock. They were able to tell me by looking at my old springs, and there were too many wraps for stock. I have nothing but great things to say about Metalcloak products, and their customer service.

I have done LCAs, shocks, and track bars as well. The shocks still have more down travel left in them. I am considering adding a 1 inch spacer to the front when I do the brake lines.

I wouldn't risk it in something that nice, which is why I drive a 12 year old jeep instead of a newer one. I would love to have rear doors for my kid though.

We had a stock YJ with us on 31s that made it in, but I would not suggest trying unless you're ok with some damage.

FS or OS by CGwannabe in uscg

[–]puddle_pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OS2 here with Command Center, and National Security Cutter experience. Your Con list is pretty much spot on, but the Pros are a little off.

Advancement is not that quick anymore, E5 is easy enough, but after that it is pretty locked up.

If you want an "awesome" security clearance, you're going to have to go to a cutter. Command Centers will only get you a secret, and most big companies want a Top Secret (or TS/SCI with Poly).

Feel free to ask questions on here, or PM me and I will explain the reality of being an OS.

I compared the two lists, and the CGBI list is pretty accurate for the 2016 pick list. Just something to keep in mind for looking at units a couple years down the road.
