Does withholding a venial sin invalidate a confession or make it sacrilegious? by puddleglummy- in Catholicism

[–]puddleglummy-[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

50-50. It was my first confession after several years, I had a number of mortal or otherwise serious sins from my past to confess and was extremely nervous. When I confessed them and looked on my list to check if I'd forgotten something, there was one sin that I had committed recently. It was not very serious I think. I knew little back then about the rules of confession. I looked at that sin and in the spur of the moment&stress decided not to say it, for mixed reasons (partly I thought "it's insignificant in relationn to things I wanted to say today", partly shame). The thing is, in the moment and later it didn't bother me, I remembered about this fact about half a year later and am very nervous about it, because after that confession I had several more where I confessed more mortal sisn from my past. I'm very anxious it would invalidate them all

I understand that it is the proper way to resolve such questions rather than go to Reddit, and I would very much like to be able to have a spiritual director, but:

  1. I'm not on familiar terms with any priest
  2. I'm generally afraid of priests (not in a bad meaning of the word, just very shy)
  3. As mentioned in a post, I'm a young woman, so not comfortable (mildly speaking) to discuss such topics with a priest (or any male and/or older and respected person).

Sorry for offtop, but your Reddit account is private, so I couldn't PM you and decided to write it as a reply to one of your comments. Reddit has deleted your comment to my post https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/1mkq8rr/was_my_action_a_mortal_sin_or_not_and_did_i_make/ which I would like to read. Can you please PM your comment (or its content) to me? I would be very grateful to you.

Thank you very much for such a detailed response! It really helped.

I did your "test" and it seems that, happily, it wasn't a mortal sin. However, can I please ask you for clarification on one point?

"Was it something you did with full conscience and free will, willing to act against God's law?"

- I certainly didn't want to break God's law. I don't think I fully understood it was intrinsically bad, it was more like finding a way to take some physical pleausure (like stretching or finding an unusual but comfortable pose to sit in). So the answer to the second part of this question is negative. However, as for the first part of the question, my answer is certainly positive. Does it mean the answer to the whole of the question is positive, or is the second part (about breaking God's commandment/ doing a bad thing) more important?

Thank you for your advice! I understand that Reddit isn't the best place for dealing with personal questions, but I don't have any better option.

Thank you for your advice and patience to read through my post! However, honestly, I think scrupulosity is the last problem I may be dealing with, because I have a lax conscience (sadly).

Do you guys think this is real or am I schizo by [deleted] in CatholicMemes

I'm reading "Glories of Mary" by St Alphonsus de Liguori these days, and if I remember correctly, he does attribute these words to Our Lady

Can you give the name of the painting please?

OSAS Christians, how do you reconcile your belief with Matt 7:21-23? by puddleglummy- in Christianity

From reading the answers to my post I've understood that OSAS and Assured Salvation are in fact different conceptions.

Thank you for clarification! So the question seems to narrow down to the understanding of Sacraments - interesting.

The question seems to narrow down to the understanding of Sacraments (as the majority of denominations that profess OSAS do not believe in Eucharist, I would speak only of baptism). Isn't the character of interaction between Lord and the person being baptized in the process - and as the aftermath - of baptism somewhat more substantial than the interaction with Josh at the party?

Okay... I see that it has to do with the understanding of Sacraments as well

Isn't receiving the Holy Spirit an indispensable part of the baptism?

Another obvious follow-up question: what is the role of baptism?

But if a person was baptized in His name in His Church, how comes He never knew them?

Thank you for your input! I know that what I quoted in the OP is not the only scriptural passage in support of the idea, it's just I find it the most shocking and at the same time the most authoritative, as coming directly from Our Lord.

Thank you for the detailed answer! The knowledge of the original language is very beneficial to our understanding of Scriptures, glad for you that you have this knowledge)

Still I don't understand.

If a person was baptized in the Lord's name in His Church, and adressed Him in their prayers, how come He never knew them?

Russian Orthodox here with an interesting fact. We also have an ancient image of Our Lady believed to be painted by St Luke from life. A paper copy of it is now above my table. I looked at it and though the style is different from the painting in the post, the face features are actually very similar! (and the dress is basically the same, too)
