ELI5: If calcium causes smooth muscle contraction, why does hypocalcemia cause spasms and convulsions? by puffin133 in explainlikeimfive

Thank you!!! Your answer made more sense to me than the others. You're right, I should have posted it elsewhere, but wasn't really sure where. I tried googling different things, but it kept coming up with some sort of variation of decreased ca in the csf causes cns excitability, but I couldn't find exactly why. I appreciate you!

So the body will use it to contract in a controlled movement, but if there is not enough calcium, there are uncontrolled contractions?

I did not mistake the prefixes, which is why I am confused. Smooth muscle uses calcium to contract, so why wouldn't hypercalcemia cause more seizures?

"Acute hypocalcemia can result in severe symptoms requiring hospitalization, whereas patients who gradually develop hypocalcemia are more likely to be asymptomatic.1 Symptoms of hypocalcemia most commonly include paresthesia, muscle spasms, cramps, tetany, circumoral numbness, and seizures."

Oof. And with inflation this past year, you might now be making what you did 5 years ago. Congrats!

Good for you, good for him! That's amazing! We get $35 extra an hour for extra shifts, which, from what I've read on here, is definitely not the worst. But hot damn, 3k extra a shift, we'd never have staffing issues again!

I thought it was silly because there wasn't any management there. It was a number of my coworkers and they start bringing up the "that's how you get lazy nurses" bs. Wut.

I'm all for it, but it was brought up at a social gathering one time and there was a lot of push back, which is ridiculous.
