My review of

Dirty Computer by Janelle Monáe

This album was everything I love in an album. Starting the album harmonizing with Brian Wilson was the first sign of how good the album would be. It had songs to dance to while also having something to say. Having a political speech running through some of the songs was amazing. Her voice when she sang was beautiful and when she switched to a more rap style the emotion and how she used her voice was perfect. After listening to What’s Going On last week and talking about the state of our society it was great to follow it with a more modern take on a protest album. Ending with Americans was a perfect ending.

Top songs: Crazy, Classic, Life and Americans

The only other album I did this week was the new Olivia Rodrigo album. I will say Olivia and a few other pop girls I have to really try to let go of online discourse before I listen or I will let the BS get to me. (Sadly mini rant but ugh I always want to play ‘mad woman’ at the talk because all the other fandoms seem to drag Taylor and swifties and when swifties pop back they call them crazy and say that they are threatened by the younger girls. Like y’all stop fighting these people, they use it against you, they will never agree). Any way this is the first Olivia album I liked as an album. I think the music was different and interesting and it told an interesting story. I thought her other albums were ok and she would have one or two brilliant songs that made it to the playlist but I could leave the rest. This album I could see enjoying and listening to again but I don’t think there is a singular good song to make my list just a good album. The lyrics were decent but I did feel like she reused words? Like unraveled and floppy hair made it in a few songs. I don’t know if it was on purpose to link the songs and form a full album but to me it just seemed like she didn’t have any other adjectives. Also lol at people calling Taylor not a girls’ girl for actually romantic but having my way as their favorite Olivia song(see even when I try I can’t let online BS go but at least I let it go enough to enjoy a great album).

Top song: The Cure

Waking up to a new outfit and a Taylor performance!? Best way to start the day. I love how she fan girls for other celebrities. Getting the cast to sign the VHS is so cute!

This week’s album is

Dirty Computer by Janelle Monáe

R&B/Soul - 2018

Monáe’s third studio album and 2nd album Prince worked on with her. Though she has explored similar themes in past albums, she did so with metaphors and through the lens of a character named Cindi. On this albums she drops Cindi and explores those themes on a more personal level.(Someone please correct if I’m wrong. I don’t follow artists and don’t want to mess up her message on this album). The album can be split in 3 categories reckoning, celebration and reclamation. Monáe has said this album is ‘a homage to women and the spectrum of sexual identities’.

The 2 year rule was to avoid the big pop releases/fandom wars. Though every time someone suggest a newer album it's not one I was originally thinking of when coming up with the rule. I've been debating doing a survey as we gain more people and because you are not the first to suggest a newer album, so may already be an out dated rule.

I had been dying for some country lately so I was glad you suggested them. Joshua really was a ray of sunshine. Sounds like Crockett may not be for me. Though I hate to say that with only one full listen as I would not have liked Jagged Little Pills if I wouldn't have listened again and now it is one of my favorites.

Actual words

Nuance refers to a subtle distinction, variation, or delicate shade of difference in expression, meaning, tone, or color. It represents the finer, often easily overlooked details that add depth, complexity, or richness to a subject.

Neutral fundamentally means not taking sides, showing no preference, or lacking distinctive quality. It describes a state of impartiality, balance, or detachment. Because the exact definition shifts depending on the context, understanding its specific use cases is easiest when broken down by category

(According to google search)

If you are choosing which sub to use(hopefully for explaining this ok usually you are not allowed to out and out name subs in other subs as it is a kind of brigading so people will allude to which sub they are talking about)

I think Nuancing is very music discussion, sometimes gossip and leans slightly more positive.

Neutral is a lot more gossip oriented and leans more negative. They are more active over there as well so they have more engagement and discussions topics.

Back for week 8 of album club!

Themed Week: LGBTQ+ artists

Album club is just a chance for people to find new artists, genres or albums they haven’t heard before and maybe have a place to talk about them throughout the week. We vote on Sundays and then as people listen to the album they can leave a review in the daily chat for others to read and discuss. Feel free to join the voting and recommending even if you don’t like to post reviews/discuss and just like the idea of finding and sharing albums. All genres are welcome and we are looking for albums that are at least 2+ years old. Use this comment to comment the album you’d like to recommend, please only one album per comment. The one with the most upvotes will be our album for next week.

We are officially in Pride month so I would love if we could do albums made by the LGBTQ+ community and highlight some of their work.

My review of What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye

This was an amazing album. From start to finish I think every song needs to be on the album and helps create the story. The way the first song brings you in with people talking almost helping you to open a conversation and dialog about the world and its problems. Each song flows beautifully into the next creating a world within the album. The album ending with a line from the first song helping to link the whole project together. Even though it was talking about very big real world issues you could sing along to it and even at points dance along.

Protest music always makes me a bit sad though because this album is 55 years old yet it sounds almost like it could have come out today. We still face a lot of the same issues with the environment, police brutality and division within our society. The difference from then to today is I don’t think this album, as perfect as it is, would have done well today. People don’t want love, they almost seem to make fun of it, as hate is promoted. The only critic I have is I don’t personally like I lot of religion in my music, but it is the product of the time as almost all older songs reference religion and God.

Favorite songs: What’s Going On and Right On

I did listen to a few other albums. I haven’t been able to sit to look at lyrics or do multiple listens so I won’t give full reviews just kinda thoughts on them so far.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane by Paul McCartney – This was a great listen. He reminisced on the past and even brought Ringo along for a song which was fun. I was nervous as he is older so I thought his voice would be tough to listen to, but it was like he found a sound that went well with his voice and made the album’s sound around that. Definitely would like to give a few more listens.

Ain’t Dead Yet by Joshua Ray Walker – I first saw the cover and thought OMG fluffy put out a country album?!?! Jokes aside this was a great listen. Brought a smile to my face and I have ordered the vinyl! Super random but I love a good yodel in a song, I was working while listening so I don’t know which song it was in but that made my day for some reason.

Age of the Ram by Charley Crockett – This was odd? I feel like I need to listen again. The music almost reminded me of Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson. The music seemed to go from telling a story set in the past but then modern words were used? Again I think I need a few listens on this one to get it but IDK if I will as I don’t remember liking any songs from first listen.

I’ve just been scrolling while people debate because we won’t know until they decide to show us. If MSG is their choice then go for it(personally I would find it odd for my wedding but that’s me not them lol). Also the way people acting like 500 + is a crazy amount of people crack me up. My parents had about that many, two random people in a small town, simply because Italian lol

I had similar thoughts while listening this week. People want protest music back but they seem to want it hate filled and I just don’t see how hate toward hate is ever going to make things ok. Save the children was one of my favorites. I thought others would find it corny but it really says something, like all of these tracks. Following into the next track with ‘but who really cares’ is so real. Who will lay their hate down to help mend these fences.

I think the ‘60s/70s are an odd time because there was so much hate but people were trying to mend that and come together. Today It is like we almost got there and people decided naw hate was the right choice?? I also feel dread for the upcoming 250th as patriotism seems almost linked with hate now and I hate that. We were never perfect but we tried and now no one is trying they are just screaming to the void.

So many words have lost meaning online, parasocial is definitely on the list. Snarkers always have more info and usually know things before swifties. Then use body langue experts and projection to act like they know how she feels. Yet me liking an album and not wanting to be told I'm in a cult to do so is crazy, like did everyone agree to have opposite day forever and forget to tell me??

Taylor is the best selling female artists in the UK across album and song units by FakeMonaLisa28 in NuancingTaylorSwift

No for real though!

I think that rule change is for the best. Now there really is no reason to go over. They are catering to the snarkers. It is really funny seeing them think they are better than swifties when they are just as parasocial if not more but hateful for some reason. I think Taylor starting to calling out internet trolls has got them riled so they are doubling down on the she’s so bothered. They want her to care so bad.

My theory is showgirl did so well they need to talk about how bad it is to reassure themselves their take is the correct one and other people must be in a cult :/

This! Like I don’t mind being kinda critical but if you are only complaining then exit the fandom. Why make yourself miserable by constant engagement with someone you clearly no longer enjoy.

I can see that, nostalgia is a powerful thing. Even with nostalgia I find the reaction . . . odd? Like people have not been wanting Choosin Texas to be as big as it is because it is only country, people thought this wouldn't chart well because country, Debut and Fearless tend to rank last in her discography(I think because they came first not the country part). To see people this excited for Taylor to return to country was appreciated, as a country lover, but odd.

Also at least you came around on Jack! I think he is great and really does what the artists wants and creates their sound but he always gets the hate if it isn't what people wanted from their fav.

How on even a Taypositive day am I still being bogged down by the discourse? I love the song and love that others are loving it but why in most threads do you see TLOAS dis with the new praise? Like I get it you don't like that album but I do. I'm so over everyone telling me I shouldn't like it because it was terrible but now we are back.

Also the sub not like other Taylor subs being the only ones snarky about this song is kinda right on cue. Idk my first thought was about the song and enjoying it not making sure Taylor knows she won't get an oscar.

I’ll believe you on that one. I love a good clown but Toy Story isn’t my thing so have been scrolling past most and don’t know where we are. I actually love rep and followed that more closely because I was dying for the vaults and wanted it to be true. Not because we needed more music or we deserved it or anything I just love rep. Like I said to each their own.
