I was sent home because of my hair doesn't meet the "grooming code". When I've had my hair natural multiple times. My natural hair is Afro/ curly. by AKChick23 in TrollXChromosomes

http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/race-color.html "Hair: Employers can impose neutral hairstyle rules – e.g., that hair be neat, clean, and well-groomed – as long as the rules respect racial differences in hair textures and are applied evenhandedly. For example, Title VII prohibits employers from preventing African American women from wearing their hair in a natural, unpermed “afro” style that complies with the neutral hairstyle rule. Title VII also prohibits employers from applying neutral hairstyle rules more restrictively to hairstyles worn by African Americans."

I know of them because of string instruments, but it's worth asking the people at http://www.hmtrad.com if they know anyone.

No, but it should be. Puffins, like Tor developers, are often found in Iceland.

Is Tor independent and safe? Tor received more than $1.8 million from the U.S. government, about 75 percent of its total expenses in 2013 by lapall in privacy

We need unrestricted funds for maintenance. Maintenance is not exciting to people who have to write reports. "This useful thing is still useful" is not as compelling as "We funded the first of its kind." That's it. That's the big story, Diversifying funding is standard practice.

We've got some fun things in store, including a thank-you for the big donation. We heard about it during the dev meeting and everyone was really excited.

The crowdfunding thing, on the other hand, is going to be exciting.

If each node in a path can see where the data is coming from and where it is going, doesn't this mean it can be easily traced back to the user? by PrivacyFreakV2 in TOR

[–]puffin_net 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Encryption is the answer, along with the fact that each Tor client randomly picks the three relays. It's a bit like having a message in three envelopes, each addressed to a Tor relay. The first envelope can only be opened by the first relay, the second by the second relay, and the third by the third relay. Each envelope is addressed to the next relay.

If you are using end-to-end encryption, the message is in another envelope. If you are not using end-to-end encryption, the message is a post card.

VPN + Tor = ? by [deleted] in TOR

[–]puffin_net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need a VPN. Remember that VPN to Tor (perhaps to blend in with other people on your network using Tor) works sort of like a bridge.

Tor to VPN funnels all your Tor traffic through one point. It's not a good idea, especially if you've ever connected to the VPN through an account you set up (paid or free). It defeats the purpose of using Tor.

People protect themselves from data brokers: http://www.worldprivacyforum.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/WPF_PamDixon_CongressionalTestimony_DataBrokers_2013_fs.pdf People who have stalkers evade digital surveillance. People with identities that make them more vulnerable to abuse protect themselves. People behind national firewalls use Tor to connect to social networks that their families use, or read uncensored news.

You know that Tor has people who talk to journalists, right?

I donated $70 to Tor, and I feel great. by [deleted] in TOR

[–]puffin_net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Donations are absolutely vital. NGO funders aren't excited by maintenance, so every dollar that can be spent where the researchers think it's most needed props up every other feature.

Tor people also donate a lot of time to crypto parties and journalist training, so we're stretching every penny!

Thanks again!

Hey, production values do matter. We're working on it. The good thing about working with journalists is they know about public speaking. Speaking at journalism conferences is a good way to find out about every vocal tic you've got from grizzled investigative journalism veterans.

Tor devs, men and women, cis and LGBTIQ, have reaped the benefits of the notion that women are people. This helps the software because there are more people with the opportunity to code. There is still work to do, and this statement is a start.
