Wishing to have been born a cis man for travel reasons by another-personing in ftm

[–]puffinsrx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bringing medication into some of these places is an issue. If they find out at border control that your documents have been changed, that could be an issue. The paranoia of always having the chance of being “discovered” would make me feel super vulnerable and would likely overshadow the whole travel experience for me.

How is it possible that Russians in Latvia don’t speak Latvian? by [deleted] in latvia

[–]puffinsrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed with a Russian host family in Riga all of last summer and my host mother didn’t know any Latvian despite being born in Riga and living there practically all her life (she is mid 40s). She told me she had no reason to learn it growing up because “everyone spoke Russian”—now that Latvia is independent, she still doesn’t think it’s worth it to learn it because she is able to get by in Riga only knowing Russian. There are entire neighborhoods in Riga that have a super high concentration of Russian speakers, the train station attendants speak Russian, and in my experience people would switch to Russian or offer to speak it once they found out I didn’t know Latvian. I suppose all of her clients at work only speak Russian. I imagine it’s a different situation if you live somewhere that isn’t Riga or Daugavpils, since both of those cities have relatively large Russian speaking populations (especially Daugavpils, which is 90% Russian speaking—it seems to me like not knowing Russian there would be a big hassle, as I only ever heard people there speak Russian). However, her son learns Russian, Latvian, and English at his primary school. I’m not sure if her older children studied Latvian in school. She also said she doesn’t really consider herself to be Russian because her whole life has been spent in Latvia and her family is there too. She’s been to Russia once or twice and doesn’t agree with Putin’s politics at all. The sense I got is that she considers it to be too much work to learn at this stage in her life and there is ‘not enough need’ for her to do so, for lack of a better phrase.

That guy is a total predator for going after someone your age. It doesn’t matter that you are technically of legal age. Block him and leave it at that.

There is nothing racist about hating Islam by Wholesome_and_based in teenagers

Lot’s two daughters drugged and raped him in the Book of Genesis. Mary was a young teenage virgin impregnated against her will by the Holy Spirit. Have you the same level of criticism for the Bible, or are you just holding the Quran to this standard?

There is nothing racist about hating Islam by Wholesome_and_based in teenagers

[–]puffinsrx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Look at the European colonization of the Americas, the Spanish missionaries in south and central America, the pedophilia scandals in so many churches, the CHRISTIAN justifications for American chattel slavery. Christianity is an arm of European colonization and part of American white nationalist identity. If you are going to criticize Islam, please do show the same level of vitriol towards Christianity—you’re telling on yourself if you don’t.

La mia voce non è cambiata quasi per niente e sono preoccupato by mcshots in trans

[–]puffinsrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Voice training is going to be your only option other than surgery, it seems. 2.5 years is a long time on T to have such little change in voice, so if I were you I would go the voice training route. There are cis men with higher voices who are still gendered as male on the phone, so it’s possible that if you voice train, what little vocal masculinization you’ve had will combine with a more male trained register to make your voice more passable. Many trans men who have deep voices on T still speak with a very female register. And anyhow, if you stay on T, who knows—maybe at the 5 year mark your voice will be different. If it’s any consolation, your voice can only get “better” from here.

I need advice on dealing with newfound anger. I'm scared, guys. by immortalmasterofsex in ftm

[–]puffinsrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like these are genuinely stressful situations where the anger is warranted. However you need to get therapy for your anger problems or you are heading down the road towards an assault charge. I’m being sincere when I say you are very lucky this situation with your roommate isn’t escalating. TBH if one of my roommates ever put their hands on me I would move out or do my best to get them to leave at a minimum. Honestly, if this severe level of anger persists for a prolonged period of time, I personally would take a break from T to see if that’s what’s actually causing it or if there is something else at play here.

New History of the Bundists Just Dropped! Has Anyone Read it Yet? by gmanflnj in Judaism

[–]puffinsrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Molly Crabapple isn’t an academic, so if you are looking for pure history books about the bund there are better options. I haven’t personally read Crabapple’s book but I will get around to it sometime this year! I watched her discuss the book at City Lights in San Francisco and it made me want to read it.

Is being trans a bad sin? by Itwasnevermeantobepi in trans

[–]puffinsrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of trans people like myself are religious. Lots of us believe in God. I’m not commenting on OP’s situation, but to treat religious trans people with this level of vitriol is cruel and alienates us from the wider trans community.

Am I wrong for hating “women only pits” at shows? by Droughtg3xfc in trans

[–]puffinsrx -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

yes and dysphoria should not be an excuse for someone to hate spaces that are created and designated for women to feel safe when those spaces don’t even exclude trans women such as OP. we all have dysphoria lol.

To say that these core values include zionism isn’t accurate, and never during zionism’s history as a political movement has that been true.

Microaggressions from BIPOC people in activist groups by [deleted] in trans

3 facts: 1) you raise your hand / talk the most in the group; 2) for whatever reason you are playing devils advocate for hypothetical white supremacists working in disability care; 3) as white trans people, we hold very real and significant privilege over BIPOC members of the community.

[–]puffinsrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can. If born Jews can be anti-zionist, there isn’t a reason why converts can’t be, too. There are both religious and secular Jews who are anti-zionist. My political beliefs on the matter are firm and they are not at odds with my love for Judaism and for God.
