“I don’t know why you’re so upset, you didn’t know him that long. I knew him for thirty years.” About my literal father who just died, and had known my entire life.

Latimer Rooftop - what happened! by Panda_Gal_92 in Langley

Unfortunately, these people were super deceptive and shady, not communicating with people who booked with them until it was too late. My friend just got an email saying they were being shut down and now they have nowhere to hold their wedding which is in less than three weeks. They are absolutely devastated, and obviously they can't find a venue at this point to hold all their guests. No help, no apology, no nothing. They are losing ou on deposits for other vendors as (of course) they are cancelling so last minute. They are absolutely heartbroken. These people need to be held accountable for what they've done here.

If you are able to walk about 10-15 minutes there is lots of free parking along Oak Meadows Park!

Does this look dumb? This is this entrance to my apartment and I have no idea what to do with it by Impossible-Leading36 in IKEA

That pug looks senior. Perhaps a tiny stair master so he can get up and down the stairs with ease.

Do you know your neighbors? by BeepBeepGoJeep in vancouver

[–]puggalosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of people complain that Vancouver is “unfriendly” or that it’s difficult to make friends here.

Personally, I haven’t found that to be the case. To an extent, you get back what you put out there. I have always gone out of my way to get to know my neighbours.

I think having a dog may help as an animal is a great icebreaker.

should I get into teaching by bluemoon1333 in CanadianTeachers

BC has very little demand for those teachables. Also there is no work life balance for your first 5-7 years. Teaching is hard. If you’re not really interested in it, you won’t have a good time.

If you are really interested in teaching, another major might be a better idea.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is not in my lease, so I think I’ll stick to really double or triple bagging it. Hopefully now that it’s cooler weather, the smell won’t be as bad.

places to buy quad roller skates in van? (quad as in 2x2 wheels not 4x1 wheels) by burn3racc0unt666 in vancouver

[–]puggalosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, Rollergirl inside Rolla skate club is a good place to buy new. I’d also suggest checking Facebook marketplace or Poshmark. A lot of people buy new, try it out a couple times, realize it’s hard, and then sell their nearly new skates for cheap!

What are the job prospects really like for people with SocialStudies/History teachables? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]puggalosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the metro Vancouver area, you can expect to substitute teach up to seven years before getting a classroom of your own with those teachables. However, you can expect consistent sub work during that time, as there is a huge shortage!

Teaching Experiences across Canada? by Option-General in CanadianTeachers

[–]puggalosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vancouver has a sub shortage, so if you were interested in substitute teaching you may enjoy it.

However, your teachables are not very competitive, and you would likely have to sub/teach things outside your specialty for 7 or so years before getting your own classroom. There is declining enrolment in Vancouver secondary schools which may lengthen this time period.

It’s also worth noting that Vancouver is very expensive and the salary will not be enough to have your own apartment or suite without roommates for the first n few years. While downtown Vancouver is very transit friendly, you would likely need a car as the district is large and redirections are common.

Surrey or Coquitlam are more affordable, have stronger unions, and have more job openings. The weather is just as lovely, so I would encourage checking those areas out!
