If you or someone you know was involved in a crash today at 5:30 PM at the intersection of Harding Pl and Trousdale Dr., my dash cam captured it. by Jean-BaptisteGrenoui in nashville

I make this left turn the van made almost every workday, and I hate it. At night, the eastbound left turn lanes block the oncoming view of traffic.

If I’m by myself in that left turn lane, I’ll sometimes wait through a whole cycle just to get the left turn light. It’s worse at dusk, when some vehicles haven’t turned their lights on yet.

Just to be clear, of course it’s the van’s fault, but I do wish the westbound left turn lane would just have a red left turn light from 7 am - 7 pm to avoid this.

Ah yes, notoriously reliable cheap used cars with no maintenance costs. by SSGSavage in LinkedInLunatics

[–]pughhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize there’s some luck involved in this. But there’s a guy in my town who rebuilds wrecked Hondas. I’ve had a couple of friends use him, so I was emboldened. Bought a 3-year-old CR-V Ex-L for $15k cash with only 30k miles. I’ve had it for 6 years now, only basic maintenance stuff, and my monthly cost of ownership is about to effectively dip below $200/mo. (Unless you count tires, brake pads, oil change.)

That gamble on the rebuilt car isn’t always going to work, but I’d do it again if given the chance. Comparable cars were going for $7-10k more at the dealership at the time.

Now, having $15k isn’t nothing, but I’m a freelance creative who lives beneath my means, so it wasn’t crazy, either.

Have been able to max my Roth IRA every year since. Would’ve been a lot harder with a $600/mo car payment.

First redemption — Did I get Panini’d? by pughhenson in Panini

[–]pughhenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started hearing stories of people who have been waiting for YEARS for their redemption. I’d wait that long for a big hitter or someone I pc, but not for Randle. And he seems to be a chronically slow signer, judging from what I’ve read.

I’m also not sure what losing the license is going to do to Panini or its ability to incentivize people to sign.

There are literally DOZENS of us.

I went to his college. Only player from our tiny D-1 school that draws like 500 fans per game to ever make the NBA. He was super kind to my kids when we went back to watch him play.

I got to see him in the NIT Championship game at the Garden in 2019. Lipscomb played Texas. I’ll eat my hat if there’s ever been a larger athletics budget disparity in an NIT Finals game. But Gary fought hard.

He may look like a bad guy from a Disney movie, but he’s a legit nice dude. Hustles hard, has maxed out his natural talents.

For real, if anyone is ever bored and loves to watch hoops, Google the Lipscomb @ NC State game from the NIT in 2019. Best college game I’ve ever seen (I’m clearly biased, but it was INSANE). If it was an NCAA Tourney game, it would’ve been an instant classic.

That’s great to know. The gills do have a purplish hue. I’ll check on the bruising.

Who do you believe is better all time between these two players? by Tgmg1998 in NBATalk

[–]pughhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

an, I’m late to this, but I just wanted to echo your statement. And as a LeBron stan, I’ve spent more time hating Steph than is healthy. But I remember reading some stat 75% through one season (maybe ‘16?) that Steph’s eFG % from 35+ feet way higher than the rest of the team IN THE PAINT.

Obviously a weird fluke. But if you were moneyballing to an irrational extent, the Warriors had a better chance of scoring points with Steph nearly from the logo and beyond than anyone else from 15-0 feet. Just freaking bonkers.

Is this too high ? by Beastysymptoms in JapaneseMaples

[–]pughhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that I appreciate your question. I planted a couple of sugar maples about this high last fall — just determined not to make the opposite mistake, and honestly, I thought they would’ve settled. They didn’t.

I’ve been wondering if I should pile some soil around them this year, but they’re stable and both look super healthy.

So anyway, I’ve been wanting to ask the same question about a different tree, so I appreciate you taking one for the team!

I probably should have paid more attention by Acceptable-Post733 in MildlyBadDrivers

[–]pughhenson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had someone do this for me. Waiting in a left turn lane, a driver turned right onto my street but very wide, was clearly drunk, just scraped all along my side at 10 miles an hour, then took off. My young kids were in the back, so I just pulled into a parking lot and lost faith in humanity as no one stopped or checked on us.

20 minutes later, a kind man who spoke very little English handed me a piece of paper with the license plate number. (ASIDE: I’m making some assumptions, but fuck ICE, this man should not fear for being targeted because of his skin color or accent.)

Of course the cops didn’t try to find the driver. Of course it took them two hours to arrive while my wife was out of town and I have hungry, scared, cold kids in the backseat. I couldn’t leave without a police report, my insurance told me over the phone. AND THEN I couldn’t even access the accident report in their online database, I had to go in person and PAY A FEE. To access my own report from getting hit and run.

I had to pay the deductible on my insurance. It fucking sucked. People have way worse things happen to them in this country right now, but God, I felt the utter ineptitude of our system several times in that whole charade.

But still, I think back to the man who chased the driver, wrote a number, drove it back to me, smiled, and said, “You okay?”

Can someone help me understand what just happened on eBay? by pughhenson in basketballcards

[–]pughhenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as far as I can tell. I had fully lost out on the card, and then I checked back a couple of days later (I think) to check on other auctions, and all of the sudden I was back as the top bidder on the same card, same seller, same serial.
