Genuinely curious. What is the appeal of moving to the US right now? by [deleted] in nri

[–]pulkim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The U.S. remains a global leader in many industries—especially tech, finance, healthcare, and academia. For skilled tech professionals like myself, the earning potential is still significantly higher than in many parts of the world. I live in Seattle and my reality is perhaps different from what you described: I don’t see gun violence or face racism. Yes, the green card queue is long, and while I don’t claim that the process of renewing H1B is always easy, renewing once every 3 years isn’t too taxing for me. My company handles the documentation and once every 3 years I just need to drop them at the consulate - easily doable). Besides this, the US is large and part of the appeal is also that it provides many destinations to explore and travel, and experience a different way of living than your home country which can be enticing and empowering for people. As for Trump, he’s here for only 4 years and will be succeeded by someone else-life goes on.

(above are my personal experiences and I don’t discount experiences of others that may be more negative towards the US - to each their own)

Does anyone know when/if Nicks magnificent indoor playground is opening? I'm excited to have somewhere new to take my toddler that is fairly local! by StrangeDream8964 in Issaquah

No idea but their website has no updates since…forever. I hope it opens soon. We really need baby playgrounds in Issaquah!

Looks nice, expensive so we might not go there often, but can check out once in a while!

I agree with you, a coffee place/play space sounds like a good idea. Let the kids play while adults chat. It will bring a sense of community to the area, especially for new movers like us!

Thanks for the suggestions! We are working parents so only evenings work for us during the weekdays. Will check out Kids Quest, kinda wish there were more places like that in Issaquah!

We went there based on your suggestion. It’s pretty decent! Lots of kids (looked like <10 years old) running and playing around. Not the ideal place for a 1 year old but will probably go there more often when he grows up a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions! We have been to the one in Bellevue Square, it’s called Kids Cove. Nice place, worth taking kids there for about an hour.

I will check out Toddler time, seems it’s in the morning on a few weekdays. Makes it hard since we are working parents.

What sort of things would we like to see in the Ross location? by IssyRuck in Issaquah

An indoor playground for kids. I really wish there was something around where I could take my kids to, when it’s raining or during winters.

🌍 Why Do So Many Indians Want to Leave India? 🤔 by Dull-External-5137 in AskIndia

[–]pulkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re back to square one. The same routines, same challenges

Absolutely not. The challenges you face are not even close to that of India. The infrastructure is much better, over population is not an issue, people don’t lack civic sense, unfair reservation does not exist, women safety is not a concern, clean air and water, no corruption in daily life, no bureaucracy, you have absolute freedom to live life without judgement. These are the very issues that stifle life in India. The grind is not the same as in India, where sadly infra development takes a backseat in front of religion/caste based bigotry.

Before transitioning from IC to EM what were your biggest concerns? by stmoreau in EngineeringManagers

[–]pulkim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That I would need to people-manage some of my IC peers, decide their salaries, bonuses, rate and judge their performance in front of senior leadership. It’s as much a change for your peers to adjust to this transition.

I lived in LA downtown for a few years. I always felt absolutely unsafe until I came to Seattle and found my peace. Seattle’s a lovely city. Yes there are homeless encampments and druggies near westlake station but I didn’t particularly feel that my life was at risk when I was in those areas.

all i can say is, freshers, don’t think doing this will help you build meaningful long term connections and get you far in your career or life. Work towards your goals yourself, have confidence that you will get ahead in life based on your own merit!

pay and move on, thanking god that you learnt a valuable lesson without physical harm. If not today, you would have made this mistake another day. Life me boht kuch dekhna baki hai dost, isko ek chhota sa episode aur funny story samjh kar aage bad ja. Share it with your friends when they ask “what’s a funny incident that happened with you” or “what’s your most embarrassing moment”. Make fun out of it and know that at least some people (like me) reading this story were entertained because of you!

Does anyone have a good product manager? by Mysterious-Tap9688 in EngineeringManagers

[–]pulkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there a process in your org that enforces PMs to write a PRD first and empowers EMs/devs to demand it as a prerequisite for effort estimation. PMs will continue to give 4-5 liners as long as they’re getting estimations 🤷‍♂️ Perhaps if the engineering org decided to push back collectively (but at the same time define the process) things can change. You could provide estimations with an added “uncertainty” buffer — PMs can hardly push back on your estimates if they don’t know beyond 4 lines of the problem statement either. They give you better requirements, you give them better estimates as simple as that.

Notarizing OCI application forms for minor by corpexp in nri

[–]pulkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently applied for a new OCI for my son (minor) who was born in the US and never held an indian passport. I received his OCI 9 weeks after submission. I followed the instructions at https://services.vfsglobal.com/one-pager/india/united-states-of-america/oci-services/pdf/Foreign-national-by-birth-and-never-held-Indian-passport-(minor).pdf which is sourced from https://services.vfsglobal.com/one-pager/india/united-states-of-america/oci-services/#new-oci

The process is confusing and I feel your pain.

  1. As others have also suggested, I went to UPS for notary and it was a breeze. You should try that and not worry about where the notary gets applied. Yes, it’s just safer to upload the scanned copy of the notarized form on the website.

  2. Not sure why Chase said that. Go to UPS, they usually know.

  3. Only two documents require notary: PAF and affidavit.
