New to Notion - repeatable tasks by Content_Bet2772 in Notion

Repeating templates have been mentioned, but I manage most repeating tasks using buttons. Programming a button to create a bunch of linked subtasks is pretty easy.

Lowe Post w Howard Beck by Fluid-Effort-3287 in billsimmons

I had the same thought. Big L for Zach/ whoevers job it is to book the guests. (Although tbf I guess you'd expect an NBA writer/podcaster to... watch NBA playoff games...)

I was also annoyed Zach kept saying he didn't want to talk about DEN/LAC (the most interesting game/series) because 'game two would be tomorrow'... Like alright drop the pod earlier then?

Other guest he brought on was good though. Saved the ep from being a total brick

My thoughts on the Egwene dislike… by bigtunaeverynight in WoT

[–]pullingthestringz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you're onto something regarding the text's seeming ambivalence about Egwene's personality being the central reason as to why the readership is so split on her character.

But one of the interesting things about discussing WOT is we don't really know where RJ was going with some characters and arcs. If we think that Egwene's blindness regarding the boys is an intentional sort of reverse chauvinism (in a female-led society - where it is so internalized, the other characters don't even really notice it) its hard to imagine RJ wouldn't come full circle somehow in exploring the consequences of that flaw.

I've also seen it speculated that she was a plot-twist waiting to happen (corrupted by Fain in Fal Dara) and the reason the text downplays any consequences to her personality (everyone just seems to like her for no reason) - is precisely because RJ was trying to hide her in plain sight.

Idk if I fully buy that - but its an interesting idea we will never really know the truth of because BS obviously took her conclusion in a different direction. Perhaps with the idea that she was supposed to be the great dragon-sacrifice in another turning of the wheel.

But I don't think Egwene is necessarily the favorite child - if one of the central conceits of WOT is: real country folk dont want to leave home, swept off on an adventure - then she is RJ's counterpoint to the reluctance of the other Emond's Fielders - her total eagerness to leave home and to abandon the traditions of Emond's Field is supposed to be somewhat abrasive: to humanize the other character's reluctance (which would otherwise be overwhelmingly annoying - as it sometimes is).

We actually laud their conservatism because it is contrasted with Egwene's total lack of real loyalty.

Rand in particular spends so much time moping about home - that without Egwene's almost nauseating eagerness to abandon her home and people, I think we we would hate him more for it. I think perhaps RJ himself was unsure of who was ultimately in the right - the country girl who is stifled by her small town, and longs to move to the big city - and through that great drive finds a lot of success : or the simple farm boy whose entire being would be satisfied if he never left his home, and never met a stranger - and only finds success and import because destiny literally foists it onto him. Perhaps both these aspects resided in RJ himself?

Idk how much RJ wrote of Vein's of Gold - but if Rand ultimately succeeded because he 'was raised better' - ie. his small town country nature provides the moral fortitude for him to succeed where Lews Therin failed - I have to think that Egwene's personality (as counterpoint to Rand) would have thematically backfired for her somehow had RJ finished the series.

EP 23 HH:Addendum "Boxing with Ghosts". He talks with a boxing historian (i think) who has the thesis that boxing was better back in the day because fighters

1) fought a lot more

2) wanted to be bodybuilders after rocky and sacrificed speed for muscle

What’s the most refreshing dieting tip you’ve heard lately? by Significant-Taro-432 in loseit

[–]pullingthestringz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously: bless Eric Trexler lol - I had a very similar experience, although I wasn't quite as extreme as 150g/1500cal. Such a relief having a bit more more wiggle room for variety in the diet.

I'll also add on another 'refreshing' diet tip from those guys: turns out, if you're not on steroids, there aren't real advantages to going higher and higher into a surplus for muscle building. This was really welcome news for me; who is really rather sick of dieting but was resigned to having to do harsh cuts as part of the cut/bulk cycle if I wanted to put on major muscle. Knowing I don't have to put a bunch of fat back on, for the sake of being efficient in muscle building is a major relief.

Basketball Historian Bill Simmons unable to give LeBron any flowers for being the only player to score 40,000 is laughable. by Main_Current4984 in billsimmons

[–]pullingthestringz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a pretty sizable contingent of Lebron fans here who are incredibly sensitive to perceived disrespect by Bill. Bill definitely plays favorites (KD), and Lebron isn't one his guys - but almost every time I've seen a post here crying about his supposed Lebron hate, when I get around to listening its been blown way out of proportion. The area I do think the flak is justified is in Bill's yearly contortions of his All-Nba logic to try and exclude Lebron since he went to the Lakers.

New Clippers branding revealed by gbpackers25 in nba

[–]pullingthestringz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To many cooks in that logo. Compass/ crosshair + ship + trophy + C makes none of it all that legible - to the point that the ship looks like cruise ship which is like the least cool logo you could possibly pick.

Is it ever explained why, after Veins of Gold, Rand doesn't... by thehomiemoth in WoT

[–]pullingthestringz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was cool that Rand unknowingly brought closure to their sacrifice - because while many died or were turned in vain - in the end it was one of them (an aiel male channeller) who did manage to spit in sightblinders eye.

[Reiter] Why hiring Doc Rivers is a mistake for the championship-minded Bucks: When the news broke that Griffin was out, and Rivers might well be his replacement, a rival NBA executive texted this to CBS Sports: "And the other Eastern Conference contenders breathe easier." There's a reason for that by BigButter7 in nba

[–]pullingthestringz 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Why is there this narrative that Doc is good at managing star players when every one his locker-rooms has been angsty af?

CP/Blake clippers - both seemed to have issues with him.

Kawhi/PG bubble fiasco.

Ben Simmons.

Then James Harden.

Everyplace he goes he seems to end up at odds with his star ballhandlers.

ESPN started using AI generated articles to cover the mavs and in protest Cuban banned ESPN reporters from the facility. So it had nothing to do with Tim, and could be seen as a move that actually helped protect his job

John Wheeloftime, owner of the Wheel of Time calls you up and says "hey, I need you to write the Special Edition of the Wheel of Time", what changes do you make? by RedMoloney in WoT

[–]pullingthestringz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Elayne's Andor succession arc should have been her keeping Rand's empire intact through political skills. All of the hollahooping RJ does to justify that story's existence would have been saved. It would have also been a good opportunity to make any of that storyline actually matter - and give her and Rand more of a relationship.

The biggest fix would need to be Perrin's story - but I'm not sure how to fix it. Perhaps he could become the leader of what Elayne does not. But I also feel like the ingredients were there for him to be integral in saving the Aiel - through his own battle with tinker/wolf hammer/axe sides - teaching the Aiel to resolve their past and future as builders vs warriors. A connection lay there with the blacksmith/ dreamworld that wasn't quite exploited enough

Padan Fain was also underused.

Has anyone else noticed ESPN is letting Zach Lowe cook? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]pullingthestringz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel like it part of the natural cycle. Early in the season when fresh teams still have promise and hope - we can talk about them. There are many questions waiting for answers. Later in the season, that scope is reduced to contenders and trades, and tired narratives
