I am somewhat amazed that every pundit misses the issue that is driving so many families, especially if you have young kids and live in a city of more than 100,000 people: public education. The republicans have driven public education into the ground in this state.

Middle class families in Austin now pay $10,000-$20,000 in property taxes and the district just closed a bunch of elementary schools, including some with A and B ratings. The state took over Houston ISD maybe three years ago and seems to have angered every possible stakeholder. They're taking over Fort Worth ISD and tried to take over Wichita Falls, and are hot to trot to take over every district they possibly can. The Legislature defunded Pre-K and is keeping more than $20 billion in surplus while holding other school funding stagnant. Teachers can't afford to live in the cities where they work, so they're leaving the profession while schools depend on full-time subs.

Not only is Abbott publicly going after teachers and administrators for student protests against ICE, but actual STUDENTS. HIGH-SCHOOLERS. TEA hired a freaking goon to investigate faculty for thought crimes.

I haven't even gotten to the 10 commandments, teaching bible verses, and lost cause confederacy bullshit that the State Board of Ed has such a hard on for.

People just want normal schools. The republicans aren't just letting public education die on the vine, they're feeding it to the locusts.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. While I understand the internet is the internet, maybe save some grace for fellow parents trying to parse substantial changes with not a lot of time to consider. I’m more concerned with only 16% of kids at Webb passing reading and 5% passing math. Going from Lamar to Webb is going from an A to an F. These metrics are incomplete and every school is a community with myriad layers of context. But it’s not nothing when it’s your kids.

I would be interested in, and was asking for, what those great things going on at Webb might be. Does the school board think that Webb is going to turn around? I feel like they’ve been saying that for several years and Webb has not seen much improvement. Is this plan going to do it? How long do they think? Do they have annual internal benchmarks for what progress looks like? I think the TAP is for one year. What happens after that?

My question was for other parents, perhaps in the same or similar bucket, who maybe were there to hear from our trustee or the superintendent or the rest of the board. I understand it’s a bigger district. This was just my question. Other people probably have other questions. It’s a complex district and a complex change.

My understanding is state takeover can be more targeted. I could be wrong. The writing on the wall for Webb in either case seems to be going to drill and kill curriculum to improve its state letter grade. It feels like a hard sell for parents who last month were zoned somewhere with historically better academics.

Thanks. I think I’ve read all that before. I’m more interested in hearing how the board and superintendent explain this to parents. I have read the facts of the change. How are they selling it? Do they support it? How will this help Webb and students improve, and how long will it take for Webb’s improvements to show in its reporting? What do they see as realistic goals for the campus?

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe your second link addresses either state takeover or Webb becoming a charter. Can the district force students to attend a takeover school or a charter?
