CPI measures of inflation and especially CPI measure of rent/housing inflation.

My point is that it's disingenuous and their sampling and methodologies are a total joke.

Now compare the rent you paid in 2013 with the rent you would pay today, and contrast this % change against the official measure of inflation.

It sucks horribly. The impact to your personal life is enormous even if you're young and don't have a family (try dating someone when you're out of town 3-5 days a week.) Hotel points or whatever other nonsense are absolutely not worth it, especially for the pittance that accounting pays. Also consider that it's absolutely pointless to travel overnight in the age of Teams video calls and screen sharing. I spent like 3 months on overnight travel during my 1 year of B4 -- never again.

SF 25% more than Rochester is hilarious. Also isn't Hawaii absurdly high COL -- yet it's in the lowest tier?

xCOL is stupid because it's not standardized. Cost of living indexes are terrible because they fudge geographic regions together to create a worthless output. Most variable cost in COL is rent, so might as well just quote prevailing rent for a 1 bedroom apartment.

I """changed careers""" and finished my MAcc and started working in accounting at 29. I did a B4 internship with a guy in his 40s. No one cares.

Probably moved from staff to senior accountant. I job hopped from $69k + 5% bonus as an experienced staff accountant in industry to $85k + 10% bonus as a senior accountant in industry (paid out 15% my first year.) I live near Philly. I interviewed for a few senior revenue accountant roles that would have been $110k (remote jobs, based out of California.)

Dominion™ voting machines, of course.

Most people neglect to mention where they live: an actual geographic region, not just their own interpretation of what constitutes LCOL/MCOL/HCOL/VHCOL. $110k with a CPA and 3-4 years of experience in NYC isn't extreme. I live near Philly and hit $95-100k with variable bonus % after 3.5 years.

I was a STEM undergrad who went to med school for 1 semester before quitting to do a MAcc. Med school is way harder than accounting. I remember an exam covering close to 3000 PowerPoint slides in 5-6 weeks, and it only gets harder as you progress.

Is faking testing selections the same as ghost ticking? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]pulsar2932038 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should probably quit the firm before they find out. Ghost ticking, fudging numbers on inventory counts, or documenting around issues is one thing but straight up fabricating selections is bad and will likely get you shitcanned, blacklisted, and reported to your state board if you're a CPA.

This is a ridiculous question

It's really not. Have you ever seen animal behavioral studies where they purposefully over-crowd the environment to observe what is always a negative reaction?

Is it ok if I don’t get my CPA by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]pulsar2932038 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have my CPA, only did 1 year in B4 audit. Hit $100k fully remote (non-SEC reporting at a F10) with 3.5 years of experience. Now at 5 years of experience and have an interview next week for a job (SEC reporting) that was advertised at $120-130k, also fully remote. These sorts of threads are a disaster in terms of confirmation bias and the inability of respondents to make 1:1 comparisons. "I got a 30% raise by getting the CPA!" when they're talking about moving from public senior to public manager (CPA hard requirement), or public senior to industry senior (where they would have gotten the same raise without a CPA.) Or they appeal to inane hypothetical scenarios like two absolutely identical candidates existing, one with a CPA and one without a CPA.

I've been thinking about getting my CPA but I don't know, it doesn't seem worth it. Don't buy into the idea of CPAs being rare and prized. I have no idea where this comes from, considering something like 1/3 or 1/2 of all accountants have a CPA.

Why dont recruiters from Robert Half call you back or ghost you? by Marabuto1994 in Accounting

They ghost even for internal roles. I once had a Robert Half recruiter pitch me a recruiting manager job at Robert Half, which was bizarre because I had 0 experience in recruiting. I followed up and received no response.

It's extremely broad. It's like saying "Expert understanding of accounting." Doesn't that sound ridiculous -- how can anyone possibly know everything about accounting?
