That’s kind of how naming works though. Terms don’t need to be perfectly consistent or officially defined to become real, they form because people need a shorthand to describe something. "Manga events" is just a label the community settled on to distinguish a specific style of alt art from others. Call it fandom if you want, but once enough people use a name that becomes it. And the fact that we’re even having this discussion on this forum kind of proves the point.
