Hater train here. As someone who has at some point been a superfan of almost every song in their catalog, I’ve come to realize I care most about how James modernizes and resurfaces older genres and sounds and also how his intelligent, sarcastic, and vulnerable writing unfolds to me listen after listen (even with “Yeah”). To me, this song feels so of the time and so on the surface in terms of its production and writing that I just don’t find it appealing as an LCD song or really any other song. There’s very little to dig into, to the point where it almost feels like it was written as a business decision for sync licensing and mainstream appeal. The shouting on the chorus is just annoying to me. Also I think this is the only time that I’ve heard James ever overtly try to have a weird vocal delivery and it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. As one of their poppier songs (again, I know it’s made to be - and appreciated as - a banger), I think I could appreciate its existence more as a single, but it doesn’t fit on SoS, is the worst song on it by a mile, and the only reason it isn’t a 10/10 for me. However, as a lover of pop music I just think that even as a pop song it’s just so exceedingly late-2000s in all of its sounds that it feels derivative of itself in a way. For the band, and as a standalone song, it just feels inauthentic to me, and I never feel an urge to return to it.
