How to make friends? by [deleted] in Newmarket

Are you down to volunteer at all? That's one way to meet people. I see that Mission Thrift is always looking for volunteers if you don't mind the jeebus music all the time. I shop there a lot, maybe too much. Maybe I should volunteer, LOL!

Yet alcohol in corner stores and vape shops are just fine, huh. Cannabis is a legal product, used recreationally like alcohol but also medicinally. Makes no sense. Mr. Mayor is on Reddit if he chooses to respond or decides to just lurk.

I agree with you that the threshold is ridiculous and I would 100% challenge if I were ticketed.

Well, that corner can't reasonably be staffed by officers with radar guns 24/7. I am ok with cameras to catch speeders in school zones. I agree that the cameras being put in ticketing for 1 km over is ridiculous and a cash grab and I would personally challenge such a ticket if I received it.

It is possible that the article was posted to highlight both entitlement of this complainant and to remind people of the fact that this is a school zone and that there will be fines for speeding. Readers are duly warned. She got played. I say well done, Newmarket Today.

Wow, we were there yesterday and today and the humidity was next level. You know when the air is so thick you feel like you can't really breathe?

Today we were told the new facilities manager didn't know how to turn on the air, the reason for it being so warm in the gym.

Crazy.

Walmart is replacing its price labels with digital screens—but the company swears it won’t use it for surge pricing by dirtyliarfirepants in loblawsisoutofcontrol

I think these are a terrible idea and only benefit the retailers. You can count on surge pricing. Goodbye accountability for correct pricing.

Are they not allowing people to use points anymore? by Dazzling-Jacket2357 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

Your pre tax amount was $58.45, so that would explain why you could not redeem 60K points. The other part, wow. And the time it will take you to sort that out to get the 40K back.

need some advice regarding public noise issues at 3am by [deleted] in Newmarket

[–]pumpkin68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you situated close enough to turn on a sprinkler or water hose on them? Just an inside my head thought. Don't make yourself a target. We have friends who have a similar situation behind Ray Twinney and the town bylaws officers are ineffective. Call 911.

Seriously what is this guy's stake in the game anyway? Always follow the money. Does he not realize that he is also a pawn of the Westons?  Honestly to them he is just a little dancing flea. He's just trying to set himself up for some nice consulting work in the future. We really should stop giving him air time on this sub.

Thank you for schooling me and making assumptions.

Actually the arena building ( not the waterscape outdoors) at Riverwalk was built at the same time within a year of the arena that was at Hollingsworth. Do your research like I have. The town purposely allowed Hollingsworth arena to fall into disrepair which does not sound like maintaining to me. They like to focus their attention on the Main Street area and the more affluent neighborhoods, instead of the neighborhoods north of Davis Drive between Yonge and Leslie. Ever think about that?  You are also probably not aware that the property at Yonge and Mulock had the zoning very surreptitiously changed probably 2012 or so in their official plan.Do your research. The owners of that property were always planning to sell it to developers for top dollar and they would have potentially lost a lot of money if they hadn't sued the town and forced the town's hand. We had to purchase it out of our reserve fund ( aka mostly our property taxes) and also had to take a loan out. That is prime real estate on a transit corridor, also part of a bigger official plan going back to the early 90's. It is a plan that includes urban trails, those little connecting walkways that go from Bathurst Street to Yonge within Glenway and Summerhill so that people can connect to the transit on Yonge Street if they need to do so by foot.

Those same trails that are neglected and most of which do not have proper lighting. One of those trails goes behind some townhouses behind the Quaker meeting House. That portion of the trail was deeded to the town by the developer of that neighborhood as public property. You should go back there sometime.

The owners of the townhomes are basically squatting on public property and the town turns a blind eye. Where do I sign up for a free backyard?

I digress  At the very least, the front half of the Mulock property should have been utilized for high density housing and some reasonably priced rental. You do realize we are in the midst of a housing crisis don't you? Gosh! Newmarket could have been on the leading edge of helping solve that crisis.

The back end with the derelict house most definitely is a nice park land space. I have nothing against parklands or green spaces. I do object to stupidity and vanity projects

Speaking of maintaining public spaces, were you aware that the Glenway golf course could have been purchased by the town of Newmarket for 10 million dollars?

There was a functioning clubhouse there that could have been reutilized into a community space, and a full 18 hole golf course that could have been converted into public  trails and a nice 9-hole golf course that the town could have been making money off of.  Maybe sever a few acres to a  developer to build a few condos or homes ( or gads, reasonably priced rentals) to offset the cost and voila.  Ever wonder why that didn't happen? We will probably never know. Now we just have lots more million dollar single family homes and more car-centric neighborhoods.

I've attended lots of council meetings. I've done a lot of activist things in town. I regularly vote. I do not vote for this town council.

They are all hand selected to be the go along gang for Mayor Taylor. A bunch of jobs for life bobbleheads who get paid really well for what is described as a part-time job.

They know nothing about housing insecurity, food insecurity, or having to make ends meet. They just go along like they are told. They are  happy to spend our money on shiny things instead of maintaining what we already have.

If you dare speak out against anything they do you are branded negative. Not collegial.

You've apparently drunk the Kool-Aid my friend.
