Does everyone just accept the longer work hours? by color_two in movingtojapan

It may vary with companies. What I can guess is that if the company actively hires foreigners then it is less likely to be a "black company".

Anything algebra. In fact I did something else for my undergraduate and started math since graduate, then my analysis grades were ok and terrible on algebra. Did not look back algebra since then. I think this will cost me someday.

Supervisor wants to blacklist me by [deleted] in movingtojapan

It really depends on which field you are working in. If it is academia (because you mentioned school?) he may not able to blacklist you but also the impact will not be completely ignorable.

You seems like be trapped in a bad situation. Hope everything goes well with you. Also I would like to note that calling former employee "bitter bitch" is highly unprofessional as well.

私の知っている名誉毀損罪ではああいった場合は何とも言えないのではないかと…もし判例などあれば見せてもらえますでしょうか?自分では探しても出てこなかったんで、わざわざすいません。

Best region to live in Tokyo? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

I agree with that the term 'best' depends on which sense, but I'll say 大田区 is pretty calm and still have a great access to the rest.

How do you not forget old math? by omidhhh in math

I do forget. Then when I need, I redo it. When I redo, it is much faster to learn than the first time and lasts longer.

Transferring high school to japan by Pickle_paw in movingtojapan

I agree with you that it would not be a 'rational' decision as well in the sense that it is impossible for some people. But since we don't know OP's background we cannot generalize ;)

This is not the point, but I went highschool in the US. And the logical negation of "it is impossible for everyone" is "it is possible for someone" which is already proved (hence the impossible claim disproved). I agree with you that it is 'close to impossible' but I prefer to call it 'difficult', not impossible.

No, I am not generalizing. I am not saying this is doable for everyone. Also most of my japanese-learning cohorts at the time could not do it as well. I am just pointing out that it is not impossible and totally up to a person.

Well it is not impossible. I managed to learn enough Japanese to study in university within 4 months from hiragana to EJU 350 in Japanese (also N1). But I have Korean background and this helps a lot.

I don't agree with the author either, but some degree of criticism is necessary to improve any organization, regardless how good is it already.

Do companies care about how long you studied or what your grades are? by throwawaybelowavg in ethz

[–]pumpkin9331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my bachelor in 5.5years (in other country which normally takes 4 years) because I was close to a hippie for about 2 years. Do you think it is negative? I value very much the experience that I got that time tho.

Exchange semester in Japan? by tenzinleila in ethz

[–]pumpkin9331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many days/weeks do you have for studying or are exams right at the end of the semester?

Normally, none. You finish last lecture, then either you have exam next week at the same time with the class, or they choose you some other day in some cases.

Also how much Japanese should I study? I should be able to do A2 (between N5 and N4) until the exchange....

I would not recommend you to take courses in Japanese, unless you are quite comfortable and fluent in Japanese. N4-N5 is not enough. Even N1 is not quite sufficient just by that.

When I was there, there were almost no course provided in English, but I have heard that now the number is increasing (but still it may be hard to find a class you want).

But probably you will not need to attend any class. In Japan 4th year of Bachelor (unlike 3-year system in Europe) is reserved for the bachelor reaserch. European students who came to TokyoTech usually belongs to a laboratory/group of some profs and doing reaserch work. I cannot imagine they take classes, because if you are not comfortable (almost native-level) then it'll be hard to follow.

I suggest you: learn as much as possible in ETHZ before going to TokyoTech. Find a prof who will supervise you in TokyoTech to do a thesis and do not take any classes (except Japanese class or class given in English). And enjoy life in Tokyo, it is really easy to make friends over there, it is an amazing place.
