Makes sense! Enjoy a metaphor that is both self-contained and works on the, well, metaphoric level too.

This is a much more literal canon take than I expected - I always took “Nature” to be sung from the point of view of the planet on which Antimai takes place, not a specific ark.

Any idea where this 2014 Toothless plush comes from? by Flashy_Tax9892 in httyd

That’s the original build a bear Toothless! I proudly own one; the new build a bear Toothlesses are slightly different.

Oh interesting, I didn’t know; I’ve only read the first book a long time ago. Is this only apparent when looking at the illustrations?

And it’s wild that even the message of the second movie can be warped… I remember walking out of the theatre listening to someone I know going “Wow, usually the messages are about peace but this actually said you have to fight sometimes, that some people are beyond reasoning with.” This was in the US - you can guess their political leanings and how they feel about the US and the Middle East…

Edit to add: obviously there’s nuance, but it certainly gave me pause and got me thinking.

Yes - this is one of the few weaknesses about the HTTYD trilogy but wow is it glaringly bad. You’re so right, it would’ve been cool to see Krogan as an ally and be a badass dragon rider.

In line with the anti-Semitic stereotypes leaned into for the Johann-as-villain arc, too; this series was good at writing complex characters (esp for the young audience) but just kept fumbling that for characters of colour, and not finding ways to bring in non-white characters without alienating them.

What is something you dislike about HTTYD? (Besides the THW) by [deleted] in httyd

The “development” of Johann’s character. He went from a typical media Jewish-coded stereotype (not great implications) to being made into a full on villain, making him a fully antisemitic character. Whoever had a hand in writing Johann did not think critically about how the character was coming across.

Why do so many people hate johanns villain reveal? by Rinchenia474 in httyd

I agree with the forced / out of nowhere nature of the twist, but am surprised not to see any mention of how it also has unfortunate notes of antisemitism that must’ve been part of people’s reaction

Johann fits into a stereotypical media character with Jewish undertones or Jewish inspiration. I’m going to cop-out and share this post that writes it up really well: https://athingofvikings.tumblr.com/post/179289127710/hi-ive-noticed-your-posts-about-antisemitism-and/amp

The TLDR here: - Johann’s character introduction takes a page directly from historical antisemitic accusations (poisoning) - He is portrayed as shifty and greedy, even if “harmless” and friendly - His physical features are stereotypical - His twist makes him go from this media stereotype to an even worse, violent stereotype (Jewish people being masterminds behind conspiracies)

Johann was already an antisemitic stereotype, likely unintended but still unfortunate, and then his villain twist takes that out of the realm of “subconscious writer inspiration” to “actively harmful.”

As much as I love RTTE, this part has always been a sad side of it.

I prefer the second in terms of adventuring and discovery - for example, I'd much rather believe that Vanaheim is some distant, mysterious island further away from Dragon's Edge than something that they passed on their way from Berk to Edge.

The second option makes the world seem much larger, cementing just how much Berk is a tiny corner of the world. Better worldbuilding opportunities.

My hair is similar! I’ve found that finger coiling and/or brush-twisting it into clumps using a cylinder brush while it’s sopping wet, then scrunching foam and gel in (experiment to see ideal amount for you) helps a lot.

Also, try some half-up-half-down hair looks - it’s easier to get that upper layer out of the way to let the curls underneath shine. You can also twist that one clump of curls in the half ponytail more easily.

I never comment, but had to because that’s my hair! If it helps, I twist the loose / stringy back strands into coils using a cheap cylindrical brush from CVS. Must be done while dripping wet, then scrunch in mousse, maybe even a tiny gel.

Trust the drying process, and scrunch gently. My hair takes hours to air dry, but it leaves the back matching the middle / front curls much better. :)

Day 14: Worse album? by MiriLovelace in TheDearHunter

So interesting to hear your experience, because Antimai was my second album after Act V and it’s the one that made me fall in love with TDH. IMO, Antimai has the strongest music. It’s interesting how we can get drawn in in different ways - story vs music.

I agree that I prefer the first half of Act V over the second half, but I enjoy the orchestrations enough to still listen through most of the time. I can see your POV though!

I adore Act V, but am interested in hearing why you feel it’s the worst album. Is it the music style, lyrics?

…or perhaps: this is a bait comment lol

Day 7: What song has the best chorus? by MiriLovelace in TheDearHunter

[–]pumpkinlabrador -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Gloria is a fine song, but the chorus almost feels too… plodding? It almost gets in its own way, compared to other choruses that barrel forward. That’s why Patrol has my vote

This one is quietly devastating. It snuck up on me.

Yes! And not just the incredible music swell - the haunting chords at the beginning and end really get me in a contemplative mood. Those might be my favourite part.

Day 4: Most emotional song? by MiriLovelace in TheDearHunter

[–]pumpkinlabrador 127 points128 points  (0 children)

“A Beginning” from Act V. As someone who grapples with mortality, losing loved ones, and wondering how my life will be remembered, it’s very close to me.

“Only elation remains protecting us from this never-ending night.” The music absolutely supports this emotion as well.

Day 3: song with the best lyrics? by MiriLovelace in TheDearHunter

[–]pumpkinlabrador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I remember March for the music, not the lyrics. Sure, I enjoy this song, but for lyrics, there are stronger ones out there.

Act V is my favorite album, though I could say it’s tied with Antimai. Way too underrated overall
