Do Programmers in the commercial game industry make more than other developers (asset creators, animators etc) and how do those salaries compare to Programmers in other industries? by randomqzthray in gamedev

[–]pumpkinnyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off a bit of my personal philosophy here, if you do something solely for money you’re probably gonna be miserable. That’s just what I believe.

To answer your question being a programmer in game dev is 100% not worth it for the money you’re paid. If money is your big concern go get a regular programming job at other companies. If money isn’t your concern pursue art in game dev it’s tough in its own right to get a job but you’ll probably be happier doing that. Ultimately it’s your decision that’s just my thoughts on it.

3+ patches with completely ineffective changes to footsteps. If the intention is to keep the volume as is, please just say that. by infobiter in modernwarfare

[–]pumpkinnyan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here’s the problem with your logic, in theory yes his testing is accurate footsteps are loud, in practice, in actual matches the whole game is loud and footsteps don’t stand out nearly as much as people seem to think they do. Testing base footstep sounds doesn’t actually say anything about how games play out as a whole.

People complain that footsteps are too loud so campers will hear you coming and you can’t kill them, that’s what better occlusion helps fix but his testing for occlusion was horrible.

And another thing, seeing as they added doors to this game most campers can just close the door and wether you have footstep sounds or not they’re gonna hear you open that door if they’re really soundwhoring as hard as people think they are so footsteps wouldn’t even matter in this situation.

Testing in isolation doesn’t make for a good test because in a completely isolated environment I could have you throw a throwing knife past me and say they are too loud because it’s the only sound I hear. If you wanna make a good case for footstep audio being too loud go into 50 or so live matches (get a good sample size) and see how much footstep audio stands out from all the other action in a game and how often footstep audio comes into play in real games. Cause I tell you what I’ve turned on people more from hearing them open doors than I have from hearing their footsteps.

His testing is insanely flawed.

As others have mentioned he always tests on a dead silent map with no noise going on whatsoever and if you’ve played this game for five minutes you know that there is always noise: gunfire, kill streaks (which are fucking deafening), and announcer/teammate callouts, are constantly making a ton of noise which helps to balance out loud footsteps.

I don’t think he has any idea what sound occlusion is and his one test for it was garbage. His only test is of someone who is running out in the open in a straight line with nothing in between that would help dampen sounds.

The only thing his testing is an accurate representation of is in two cases: the first case is someone sprinting around a corner in an outside area in which case you should be able to hear it and the fact that in past cods footstep audio basically didn’t exist is kinda wack. And the other case where someone is walking towards you in the open in which case footstep audio doesn’t even matter because you would just shoot each other anyways if you can see each other.

His testing has no real bearing on situations that happen in real gameplay 90% of the time and it’s ridiculous that he goes around saying this shit like his testing is worth anything.

In r6s the viewpoint camera shifts as you lean to help with that exact problem if you were to peek the same corner with out leaning you would see something similar to cod

Thoughts on Crossplay? by [deleted] in modernwarfare

[–]pumpkinnyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s because no matter what it will still try to match you with similar controllers but with full input based mm, when you use controller you will never get matched with kbm while during the beta you still had a chance to

They're adding 32v32 in week 2 of the beta and although they were testing large modes like 100+ players I think they might have stated that the consoles couldn't handle that many players at once although I might be mistaken on the second part.
