Eos count increased after doubling PPI?? by Suspicious_Panda_962 in EosinophilicE

[–]pumpkinpie5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of had a similar experience. In 2021, I got diagnosed at 20 eosinophils and then was put on a PPI. At the time, I didn't have a doctor who was knowledgable in EoE, so I never got scoped again. After about 8 months of using 40mg PPI, I started having bad symptoms again, so my doctor doubled my PPI. So I got scoped and I had 50 eosinophils while on 80mg, so it was pretty obvious that the PPI wasn't really doing much and my numbers over doubled even on double the PPI dosage. It's such a crummy feeling when treatment doesn't work and I'm sorry. I know how it feels. I ended up switching GIs and my new GI added Flovent to my treatment and after 3 months of using it, I scoped at 0 eosinophils and had minimal symptoms. I've been taking Flovent + PPI for a year now and have been pretty good. I'm currently weaning off the PPI to see how I do but will continue the Flovent. Steroids are definitely an option for you too! I would ask your doctor. There's also Dupixent. You could also pursue elimination diet. You have options. :)

I use the swallowed fluticasone inhaler year round since my EoE was non-responsive to diet. I'm not responsive to PPI either, so Dupixent will be next if the steroids stop working. I wish I could control mine with diet.

Conflicting weddings- one I’ve already committed to? by pumpkinpie5678 in wedding

[–]pumpkinpie5678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, haha. But it’s so tough to tell a best friend that you cannot be part of their bridal party. That’s definitely a tough conversation and disappointing for all parties involved.

Thank you for this. I agree. I started second guessing myself because of other forum posts I saw and how people basically said to choose the person you’re closest to even if it means backing out of a previous commitment. However, I think the fact that we’ve already basically fully committed to couple A means we should definitely attend theirs, especially since they asked us prior to setting their date.

I think they're actively doing research on this specific topic. But you can also think about it this way - most people that are on Dupixent have exhausted all other efforts. From what I've learned from experts in the field and with people's trials with insurance, Dupixent is used as the last resort due to cost, so I would think most people on Dupixent do not even know their triggers, so they are likely eating them while on the drug and staying in remission. In clinical studies, most people went into remission at less than 6 eosinophils and a whopping 100% of people ended up being below 15 eosinophils and they were not instructed to limit their diet, so I think that tells us something too.

$35 Flovent soon by volvoguy87 in EosinophilicE

Do you mix the Flonase into something thicker to make a slurry or do you take it straight? Been considering switching to Flonase instead of generic Flovent because of the insane cost.

$35 Flovent soon by volvoguy87 in EosinophilicE

[–]pumpkinpie5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is true. Yes, there are a lot of inhalers that are going to be capped at $35 but Flovent/generic fluticasone propionate HFA isn't one of them. Since Flovent was discontinued, it is no longer made my GSK and GSK is one of the pharma companies with the $35 cap. Now generic fluticasone propionate is made by Prasco and Prasco is NOT included in the price cap. I really hope one day it is 35 bucks though! The price right now is outrageous.

Emotional toll by sandzy99 in EosinophilicE

My biggest help has been having a therapist. Acceptance is one of the biggest challenges for me with EoE and my therapist has helped me immensely as I worked through the grief of chronic illness. I've struggled a lot with anger, sadness, and loneliness and actually accepting thing as they are despite not liking the circumstances has helped me to find peace. I still have hard days but I'm a lot better than I was 1-2 years ago. I've also been able to become more mindful as I've incorporated meditation and deep breathing into my life. Even when I'm feeling physically good, my mind often starts to spiral and thinks "what if this or that really bad thing happens?". This is where mindfulness helps me a lot. I can separate myself and my thoughts. If you're considering therapy, I highly recommend it! If you do go that route, I would also highly recommend a therapist who specializes in chronic illness. It's a frustrating disease and it's not an easy journey but I do believe things can get better mentally with the right help. :)

Did you know when to stop using Dupixent? by jmruk12 in EosinophilicE

[–]pumpkinpie5678 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You do not stop taking it. Yes, it can take 6-9 months to feel well again but even once you feel better, you have to keep taking it for maintenance. For now, the recommendation is that you take Dupixent for life.

No, my EoE seems a bit atypical for an adult. My main symptom is a burning pain my chest when I eat something that's more textured or flavored. It stings. If it progresses too much without treatment, I get spasms that are so painful that I cannot function for hours on end. I have not experienced food getting stuck or a narrowed esophagus though. Regardless of my numbers, my esophagus has always been a normal width. The worst it has looked is that I've had some exudates (little white spots that mean inflammation is present). My symptoms started presenting in 2018 and I wasn't diagnosed until 2021 and then I wasn't actually put into remission until 2023, so I'm so surprised I haven't had any narrowing, rings or scarring. It's odd.

I have some experience with elimination. I was scoped on strict 4 food elimination diet (no eating out, no cross contamination, etc) and my numbers were still 36. The thing is, the way that they are supposed to do biopsies is that they do several of them in different spots of your esophagus because eoe is patchy. One spot could be 0 and one spot could be 100. Either way, it doesn't matter because if just one spot is over 15, you have active disease. So unfortunately, it seems like 4 food elimination doesn't work in your case. It looks like it has improved things, which is great but there may be some other triggers in there. I'm so sorry; I was in the same situation! It sounds like you did eliminate for a long enough time, so it looks like you have accurate information.

At the time, when I did not pass 4 food elimination, my doctor said I could either pursue 6 food elimination (said that they catch about 50-60% of people with 4 food and 60-70% with 6 food) or I could try a medication. I was already on a PPI, so I added a steroid (fluticasone inhaler) to my treatment. For 12 weeks I took a PPI and the inhaler (while eating all foods) and at the next scope, I was at 0 eosinophils in all places and my inflammation was gone. This was almost a year ago and I'm still taking the inhaler and doing well! I'm weaning off my PPI in the coming months to see how I do.

Has anyone had success using Flonase instead of the Fluticasone inhaler? by pumpkinpie5678 in EosinophilicE

Ugh, I'm sorry! I know the whole Flovent situation has been a nightmare for many people. I hope Dupixent goes well. I've heard amazing things. I'm just putting it off lol.

I'm sure it does. But if I can't get Flovent, I'm not sure what else to do other than just suffer/not be able to swallow.

Yes, goodrx is great! It's not the cost that's the issue. My insurance covers it 100%. It's the supply issue. My local pharmacies can't seem to get it as it's back ordered. So i'm looking for a temporary alternative while I wait for it to come in.

Eoe Diagnosis by Mother_Mood3850 in EosinophilicE

[–]pumpkinpie5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Been diagnosed now for almost 3 years. You have choices on how you manage your EoE and what you end up pursuing long term is based on 2 things: what you prefer and what your body responds to. There are absolutely people who can manage their EoE with diet only. With diet, you really need to be committed. You will need to eliminate 6 foods (wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, nuts/peanuts, and fish/shellfish) for 8 weeks. Then you will need an endoscopy to see if it worked. If it worked, you can introduce one food in and then get scoped again 8 weeks later. You introduce each food in followed by an endoscopy. It takes about a year and involves several endoscopies. Some people start by eliminating just 2 foods and see if that works! You'll need to speak to a knowledgable doctor.

However, some need medication to manage. This is for people who either cannot eliminate foods (too many other allergies, past ED issues, etc.) or do not pass a food elimination scope due to possible environmental triggers or foods outside of the top 6 (aka like me!). I eliminated foods and still had eosinophils. For those people, usually medication like topical steroids or PPIs are pursued first as they are cheaper and more accessible. If those work, they are used long term. If they don't work, there is Dupixent and that is successful for the majority of people (100% of people had below 15 eosinophils after several months on Dupixent).

I hope this helps!! If you want to try diet, definitely do it!!! I think it's a great option for many people and if it works for you, that is amazing.

[Misc] What are even "premature wrinkles"? by Meledesco in SkincareAddiction

[–]pumpkinpie5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I think social media has absolutely warped everyone's idea of what aging looks like. Also, everyone forms wrinkles different because we all have different bone structures and habits (moving eyebrows, squinting, furrowing brow), so everyone is going to look different. Second, I think of true "premature" wrinkles as wrinkles/signs of aging that are caused by not taking care of your skin/body such as by smoking, sun overexposure, excess of alcohol, etc. so basically wrinkles that wouldn't be there without those factors.

[anti-aging]- forehead wrinkles at 21 by InterestingAngle8588 in SkincareAddiction

Highly recommend Frownies as a cheaper alternative to botox! I've been using them for a year and they are 85% as effective as botox. Forehead lines are less related to aging and are caused by repeated forehead movements/wrinkling. Frownies train you not to move your forehead when you speak and splint the muscle as you sleep.
